So I work in a magazine. Write all kinds of stuff there. I have a deadline on Tuesday so I went to the office today just to complete some of the stuff (I don't have access to all the databases I need to use at home). The creepy thing is, my PC there runs Windows 98. Lame, isn't it? I know that. That's why I installed the Acronis True image application to back up the entire installation, just in case. Having finished all work, I ran the dratted program to back up. But I first tried to remove the hidden partition and - why oh why did I do it, should've just left.
Upon restart, the comp displayed the 'No system disk' crap. It's all freaking gone, all the installation and the crap.
Damn. I don't believe I screwed it all up.
Good thing though that I had 2 logical drives and kept all the stuff on the second drive. So I decided to take the harddrive out, bring it home and to extract all the info so that noone would know. I'd hate to call our sysadmin on Tuesday morning telling I farked up the entire installation. But what is even worse, the boss expects the files to be delivered by 10 am Tuesday, and there's no way I can reinstall Windows and Office and all and get the files back even if it would be possible at all.
There was noone in the office, just me. But there weren't any screwdrives either. The guards could sneak in any time, and if they'd see me opening the damn computer case, I'd be screwed. At least that's what I felt like. Having lost about 20 minutes looking for a screwdriver, trying different objects on the screws (like paper clips) I found a big stapler with some sort of hook on the rear.
With that object I opened the case, extracted the hard drive and put it in my bag. Then I went to the phone to call the guards to seal the room. I almost picked up the phone when I realized I didn't have the proper clearance to enter the building on Sunday. My plan was to restore the drive, record stuff on it and to reinstall on Sunday. But it would've been impossible, I'd be stuck with the drive outside! The dratted PC doesn't even have a CDROM and I don't know proper passwords to turn on computers of other employees. The only way to fix it was to load the drive with goodies and put it back.
So I put the phone down. Sweating and fearing the guards to come in, I hastily put it back and then left.
How stupid all this is!!! Damn I'm never touching frigging computer crap again or those lame ass programs that are supposed to make things better and screw all up.
So officially I am dumbass of the day.
