How I think Highly Technical could be fixed.

Junior members are not allowed to post new threads, they may reply, but they cannot start a new thread.

I think it is mostly newbies that do now have a clue what highly technical is that post things like, "should i use my monitor controls or the ones in windows?" type of questions (<- that was hypothetical)

That may work, but lets look at the other side of your idea. Say perhaps a new member joins and wants to have some Highly Technical discussions or has some true High Tech questions, but is unable to post in HT. So what does that "junior member" need to do? He/She needs to figure a way to up their post count so that they will be able to post new topics. I know that the irrelative threads in HT get annoying, but you have to look at irrelative threads in all the other forums. Every one of the forums suffers from irrelative threads and the best that can be done about it is have the mods lock or move it.

"Junior Member" does not necessarily equal "newbie" which certainly does not equal someone who can't ask or answer a HT question.

That's a huge misconception around here... That somehow post count equals someone's intelligence or experience. There are plenty of people around here with very few posts, that have a wealth of information to give.

And there are even more with a boatload of posts, yet nothing of worth to contribute.

agreed. some of the most informative and useful posts in HT are by people with very few posts, whereas some of the... stupider posts (and OT posts, such as "hey geniouses, how do I run <insert program name>" are by people with well over 200 posts, who you would expect have learned to follow rules / read the stupid sticky at the top of forums, etc. already.

edit: case in point, a member with 228 posts currently has the only locked thread in HT, whereas EmMayEx, with ~70 posts, gives very insightful/informative replies, and kartman with ~30 posts also asked an interesting question.

I'm sort of fuzzy on the definition of what the HT forum is--and I've been around a while (longer than this incarnation reflects).

I remember posting a thread on the mathmatical scaling of images on 3dfx (nearest neighbor) vs. Nvidia cards asking how this could be tweaked (this got *no* replies in the video forum previously, so I thought it would be interesting to take it to a higher court). Of course, it was promptly locked while a half dozen threads where people compared penis size by arguing about future tech that won't be here for 10 years were deemed legit.

close, but there are some things that, while not necessarily HT, shouldn't be locked, IMHO. I'm with richleader. I think some threads aren't locked that should be, but some shouldn't.

HT could be a forum where "difficult" questions that aren't answered elsewhere could be asked... occasionally I have questions that go unanswered or get retarded answers in GH, but would be locked elsewhere.

The biggest problem with the HT forum is the subjectivity involved in determining the technicality of a post. To someone, a post might be reflect a complex, hard to understand topic. To someone else that very same post will be trivial.

Different people see things differently. This is why some posts appear to have been unfairly locked and others appear to have unfairly survived.

I don't think there is an easy solution and I definitely don't think it is fair to relate post count to knowledge or intelligence.
