How I can get Max Performance

I need to get a maximum throughput between GB network.
recently I am doing lot Data Xfer in size of 1/4 TB.
These computer connecting to each other via Dlink 4300
OS is XP Pro on both computer
HDD are WD 1 TB Black.
NIC are Intel Pro MT Desktop 1000 (PCI)
Other is RealTek PCIe 1000 (on Board )
Drivers are latest off the WebSite.
I am not sure what setting can be done to
get MAX perfomance in driver section of the cards
It appears to be I can't break over 40 MB (300 Mb)
Is there any setting I can do to speed up little bit more ?

put a switch in front of the router. gigabit of course. they are cheap.

Replace the realtek with something with some power. An intel is always a good choice.

I get more than 70MB with two Realteks and this cheapo Giga Switch.

What ya think ? Am I getting saturated by PCI Bus on system; where intel is running off a PCI bus ?

what else is on the pci bus? pci is fast until it is shared.
