How hot should my P3 be?

I can jump into the bios hardware monitoring and it reads between 68 and 70 degrees C. This seems really hot, but I'm used to my AMD processors that don't have the internal thermistor. What's a safe range for this processor? It's only clocked at 500.

YaBaBorn,

What heatsink are you using? Are you using heatsink grease? Is the heatsink resting flat on the cpu?

My P3-700 CBO @ 933 1.7v Runs at around 32c doin normal stuff and around 45c under full load. Maybe your motherboard isnt reporting your temps correctly because im suprised you wouldnt be getting lockups at that temp. I did read somewhere that the P3s are rated up to 80c never heard of anyone with a stable system with temps as high as yours. Hope this helps.

Supradude,

That is an incorrect statement. 45C with a 30C ambient temp is not high for a p3. It all depends on your ambient case temp. During summer, my case hits 35C, with a 45C cpu temp. With another heatsink, you could be over 50C, and proably still wouldn't see any problems.

I believe the thermal max spec is 80C. Even so, I don't recall seeing anyone saying their temps are much above 50C. Most would say that 30-35C is norm for idle temps. Since you are reading from the BIOS, I would consider this close to idle. Try running Motherboard Monitor if your board supports it. You may need to pull the P3 and make sure the heatsink is on the chip. Those temps sound like you don't have a heatsink or fan even installed.

You know I had the same problen with my system it read in the 80's and thought that my chip was smoking and would burn up so I put in the comp-u-nurse and get readings of 29c with rain and 35c with out...By the way is your motherboad a abit??

I have an Asus CUSL2-C with Win2K installed.

Any idea what CPU temp programs I could run with accuracy?

Really depends on whether or not you would like it medium or well done.
Different temps for boiled CPU's as opposed to fried too :)
