How hot/loud does your GTX 460 get?

Last week I got a Palit GTX 460 (http://images17.newegg.com/is/image/newegg/14-261-074-Z03?$S640W$) 768mb (on sale for $190 at my local Micro Center). I only play SC2 at Ultra settings, no AA, 1920 x 1200. After a while the card starts whining. I wear headphones so it doesn't bother me and I flip back and forth a few times to check PC Wizard temps. It's reporting 55-62C with a fan speed of 60-70%. It looks like the reference card design with a slightly different heatsink. No cooling for the memory. PCB gets really hot on the backside (can still touch it, but it's hot). I upgraded from a 7900GS and I'm not sure if this is par for the course, so how loud/hot does your card get? Should I be worried? Maybe rig a fan inside the case to blow down on the back of the PCB?

Also, when I flip back and forth I get some "derendered" areas in the game (though when I leave that area and come back it's rendered correctly again), but this only happens when I alt-tab out of the game and back in. I'm guessing this is to be expected.

temps are very good. at 60-70% you're going to hear the fan on any video card. my gtx 260 is by far the most nearly silent card that I've ever had, and I can still hear the fan starting at 45%. at 60% it's very noticeable, at 70% it's very annoying.

I believe the palit's are the worst 460's. I got an evga reference in 2nd computer and I can barely hear it, ever. Got up to 60c when running 3dmark vantage. Scored a 11,500 score stock clocked 768mb card. My old gtx 280 scored 10,800. Got mine new in box for $165 total. :)

Hmm, I read that on a couple occasions. I wonder if I should just return it then and buy a 1GB online. If so, what are the quietest ones?

evga is your best bet. they have 2 cards, one with a top fan and another that exhausts the air out of the case. You want the card that sends the air out of the case.

I have the EVGA GTX 460 768MB Superclocked and it's extremely quiet. I never hear it even when gaming. It idles around 35 degrees Celsius. I haven't taken a measurement of temps while gaming yet.

Also, the cards with the fan blowing the air out only, do those run cooler? I have decent ventilation and it seems like the more exposed coolers would be better overall if you can remove the air from inside the case.

Check if you're card has a heatsink on the vrm's. It seems that somehow only the cards that were sent to reviewers ended up with a heatsink on the vrm's. If it doesn't I would definately return it if possible. Else put a fan there. Dont switch to Gainward, it's the same manufacturer.

EVGA cards are good as mentioned. Which model doesnt really matter, one keeps the card cooler, the other keeps your case cooler. Both within very acceptable ranges. The Gigabyte 460 is good as well.

You are correct about the External Exaust design. Its great if you want to SLI cards end don't want to push hot air on the lower card. Also, in an HTPC it would be great.

When case ventilation is decent, lot of people ends up with the twin fans design on the Gigabyte flavor. They are mostly silent <70% and runs cool if case ventilation is decent. They are also factory overclocked.

I have one overclocked from factory to 800/1600/1900. If I let the onboard chip control the fan, it rarely goes over 50% but the card is heating up a little to much for my taste. I went up to 76C while stressed. With softwar fan control, I like to keep my fan to 65%. Its barelly audible end the temp will stay under 68C while stressed with room temp at 27C. 70% and up is when I start to hear the fan but is not requiered for low temps on this baby, even with strong overclock.

I would return the Palit and give a chance to Gigabyte.

I just returned it over lunch. No heatsink on anything other than the main die. After doing some more research and reading the reviews, I got the Gigabyte card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125333

$40 more but I'm ok spending it. I think with the 768mb, stock, louder/hotter card I'd be pissed that I'm just short of hitting that sweet spot (1920x1200, Ultra settings, basic AA). With this I should get over 60fps in SC2 and D3, which is all I care about game-wise.
