the maxtor figures are for ambient air temperature & not the temp of the hdd itself!

If your ambient temp is 50-55C, then you need to take your computer out of the sauna! 😀

Seriously though, that temp is rather high. My Maxtor drive reads at 38C with a case temp of 33C (granted, I have two intake fans blowing directly on it).

My Western Digital SE is very hot to the touch. Make sure that the breather holes aren't covered. Not only will it help cool down the drive, the warranty is voided on some drives if the holes were covered.

Both of my western digitals are very damn hot, but then again they're right on top of each other... (oops 😉)

The 120 gig in my server is in my basement so it's nice and cool down there, plus there's good ventilation in that compaq case 🙂

my maxtor d540x 80gb is running 26c with no cooling 🙂

not sure about my 3 cheetahs, but they are actively cooled and only warm to the touch 😀

wow, mine goes up to 60C, with the case open!

i didnt even know i had breather holes! i will check.

i plan to get hdd cooler tomorrow.
