How hot is too hot?

My new machine has the ASUS Ai program that tells me CPU temp. It seems to steadily climb the longer my machine is on into the low 50s C.

Is that too hot? Is that measuring true CPU temp or chassis temp?

I have a P-180 case, twin HIS 1950XTX in crossfire, X-Fi card, Liberty 620 watt PSU.

I don't overclock anything - but I also have zero 3rd party cooling: no special CPU heatsinks, extra compounds, extra fans, 3rd party GPU coolers/fans - nada, zip, zilch.

I posted about this before so sorry for the spam - but I am noobish about computers and lately my rig seems to run even hotter than at first it seems since now I have had a chance to run the machine longer. How hot can I run with no worries. I'd really prefer not to modifiy my machine at all anymore since that means I have to call in a tech since I can't do it.

Assuming you have an AMD machine, and provided your description it's mid-50's on idle, then yes I would say that the temperature is awkward. Most people regard a temperature of under 60C as optimal, though, so unless you pass the 60C mark on load then you should be relatively fine.

Me, I idle at about 39C.

However if the temps you described are load then you are fine.

Might check the bios. I was reaching 51 or 52 under load but the bios was set to not kick the fan until i reached 50 - moved it down to 47 so now the system runs around 47 under load (idle is around 37).

It is a Conroe E6700

What is "under load" mean?

I don't usually go to 50s - start at around 39 but CPU temp seems to climb even when doing nothing if machine has been on for hours and hours. It seems to go into 50s only when I am doing something that really makes it work - esp. that makes the graaphics cards crossfire spool up - and even then only after a long time with the machine on (hours).

Under load means you are running a program that taxes the cpu (such as prime95 or some games). Idle means your sitting there staring at your desktop (i.e., the cpu is doing very few computations).

You are running a bit hotter than I would like to see for an idle temp. Looks like improving airflow is needed an aftermarket Heatsink like the Arctic 7 Pro or similar would probably help, But the heat still needs tto be removed from the case. More details of your set up would be helpfull and get you better suggestions.

Perhaps some cable management/airflow is in need? You've got an excellent case. I shouldn't see much problems with cooling.

"It seems to go into 50s only when I am doing something that really makes it work"

I take it that it gets into the 50s only when you're doing things that "tax the CPU." In that case, your temps are a bit high, but not rocket-high. Invest in a small after-market cooler: the 7 Pro is a 30 USD solution that is relatively cheap and should do good cooling, as Amos said.

My general rule of thumb is: under 50 deg.C, all is copacetic, between 50 and 60 I start to worry, over 60 I tear the HSF down make sure its seated properly and that the heatsink is flat - give it a new coat of grease and reassemble, clean any wooly bears out of the fins and fans and check the air flow thru the case.

That is getting pretty hot, but you might just has a motherboard that reports temps higher than they really are. I'd see if anybody else reports high temps with that monitor.

If it's stable and not throttling there probably isn't anything to worry about.

should i trust the temp monitors if they're reporting idles of 60+ and loads of mid 60s to 70s? When i feel the hsf it's not even warm. I know hot, when i touch the hsf of my x1900 it's hot enough to burn my hand after a while. only sandra reports normal temps of 39 idle 43 load. im confused.

sry to hijack thread. point is, find a way to lower your temps immediately. perhaps the sensors are wrong like crazydood said. maybe feel the hsf? i don't know. sorry.

In my experience the software is reasonably accurate on temps but not so good on voltages. Try several of the different hardware monitor softwares (Speedfan, the latest MBM - I hear the author recently updated it for a few more chips, etc.) to see if they are all in the same ballpark. You shuld also be able to adjust anything that is settable in the BIOS from the factory monitor software. And go to the Asus site to be sure you have the latest version of Ai for your mobo.
