How hot is to hot?

I've got a seagate 200 7200 and a wd 120 5400 in a mini ATX case. Both drives are beside each other and there is very little room in between. When I touch the metal box they sit in it is warm to the touch, not hot, but warm enough that I know its there. So my question is, at what point does heat start taking life off of the drives? Speedfan is reporting 42c and 45c for them however I'm not sure how good of a read out that is. 🙁

thats fine, warm is ok. hot is bad. as long as they are conducting heat through the case a bit iand the case is decently ventilated its ok.

unless it's scsi and HOT is you only option

Is that at rest? Copy a few gb and see how much they heat up. Mine (mid tower) are around 25c normally, as high as 37c if I'm really working them... if yours are hitting as much as ~60c you might want to look at keeping it to a single drive if you can, being that it's a small case and they're next to each other... or at least putting in an intake fan blowing over them, if you can.

Lol, all too true. I have come pretty close to burning myself a few times when I didn't wait long enough after shutting a system down to remove a 10k or 15k SCSI drive. You could probably cook eggs on those things.
