How hot is to hot when overclocking?

Just curious as I was looking into overclocking my P4 2.53. At idle it usually runs at around 40 degrees. What is a safe level of heat for it to be operating at when O/Ced? I know it depends on how far you O/C it and if that chip can handle it, but at a guess?

Also a question about RAM. I'm running Corsair 3200 and was wondering, is it best to always have the memory frequency set to run at its highest setting? Before and after overclocking?

Thanks.

I'm guessing your temps are °C. Handle is a relative term. The hotter it is, the shorter it will last. I think the max advised temps for early P4s was 110°F. I don't know for the current ones. I wouldn't go over 105°F.

They only tell you the case temparature maximum. I have a feeling the absolute maximums are similar to those of the AMD Athlons; that is, 90-95C.

which is why I said,
*NOTE* when they say case, they mean the casing of the processor.
This is the temp your motherboard is reporting. They don't mean the ambient temp of your tower.

see page 65 of the pdf for more info.

you probably could get it up to 90C but being that the norm tends to be at around 40-45, I don't think it would be good to run it at double that.
