How hot does a celeron get?

Just wondering...need to drop in a celeron in my system to flash the bios so they are ready for conroe. I dont want to apply thermal paste and all that jazz...just kinda do a quick connect, flash, then replace it without fully applying the heatsink/fan. Is it possible to do with a lower clocked celeron?
 
passive cooling does not mean that you use no heatsink, it means that you use one without a fan.
using any lga775 proc with no heatsink at all will probably ruin it.
just be safe and use a heatsink with thermal paste
 
Maybe, but probably not. Why take that chance? The cheapest Celeron I've seen is ~$50. And you're going to have to buy thermal paste for your C2D, anyway. Why not put $.20 worth of thermal paste on the Celeron? Because guess what happens if you don't get the BIOS fully flashed, before the processor burns up? That's right, you get to buy another Celeron and and then send your motherboard back to the manufacturer, so it can have a BIOS installed. Of course, it's your choice. Let us know how it goes, if you try it without any thermal paste.

edit: And if you were talking about running it without a heatsink, good luck with that. You won't even make it TO the BIOS, much less be able to actually update the BIOS.
 
Basically NO. Not even Dothans can run without a heatsink at all and they're not that great at running passive either. A celeron will crash and burn since it would, more likely than not, be based on 90nm netburst (prescott for the win). Like Myocardia said, if your PC crashes as you are flashing you'll have a mobo with a dead bios that will not work until the bios chip is replaced.
 
Well there was that athlon 64 which was ran bare at 1ghz, but no i doubt a celeron will run without a heatsink (like Furen mentioned most celerons being a prescot core and all 😛)
U can mount the heatsink without thermal paste, the temps wont be good but it should work (i would check for stability first before flashing)
Most mainboards now days have recovery procedures for the when bios flashing is interupted but stil better do it properly first time.
 
alright...thanks guys. I suppose I'm just lazy and didnt want to use the thermal paste or hook the fan up. Looks like I will do both.

You know, it's really better to be safe than sorry, especially with the prices we pay for some of this equipment.
