How hot do AthlonXPs get?

Putting together a new htpc, going with microatx and trying to keep it QUIET. I'm wanting to go with an AthlonXP with this heat sink and probably replace the fan with a vantec stealth(assuming it clears in the case). There will only be one side-facing 80mm vantec stealth fan so I want to make sure it won't be too hot.

Also, I'm wanting to go with this board since it has everything integrated.

Key to this is small, quiet and inexpensive.

What say you?

heat shouldn't be an issue.

Even though the K7 core is safe till around 92C ( not stable )

Keep it under 65C and you are ok.

27dB really isn't THAT quiet.

Find me a quieter 80mm fan. The quieter the better. I DO NOT want to hear this thing, haha.

Why don't you get a Biostar M7NCG rev. 7.2 (BIOS adjustable VCore and cpu multiplier) and a mobile Athlon XP (35W or 45W)?

Made in Japan (Made in China ones are supposed to have noisier bearings) Panaflo L1A 80 mm fan is very quiet, especially undervolted to say 7V or lower.

If price isn't too important, you could also get that MSI mATX mobo with the ATI 200 chipset and a cool'n'quiet Athlon64 cpu.

I was thinking of going with an athlon mobile and trying to go without a fan on the HS, I dunno.

Reason I want the the Chaintech is because it has integrated s-video out.

"I was thinking of going with an athlon mobile and trying to go without a fan on the HS, I dunno."

That's probably pushing it, even with an undervolted mobile, especially in a small form factor case, which tend to have much poorer ventilation than tower cases. Search the archives at http://www.silentpcreview.com and see what they say.

Matrox G450 with the composite / s-video adapter will probably put out a much more beautiful picture and is probably less than $30 on Ebay.

Also got a lot of neat dual monitor functionality such as being able to play a dvd on one screen (e. g. TV) while surfing the web on another.

That heatsink is WAAAYYY too small for an XP CPU. Look for a slim volcano. It'll be the perfect HSF.

Need low-profile because I'm wanting to stick with a slim case.

Get a Zalman CNPS-7000 or 7700 series cooler
Athlon XPs usually run around 30-50C, mine hovers around 40 idle, and 45 load
