How historically accurate is HBO's Rome?

I know the two soldiers (while they are my favorite characters) are complete fiction, how accurate (at least to historical records of the time) are the main characters (Mark Anthony, Caesar, various senators, Octavian, etc) presented. Also, how accurate are the pagan rituals that are shown and other things?

The two soldiers are not *complete* fiction - they are in fact the ONLY two soldiers mentioned by name by caesar in his writings.

The characters based around them are fictional (but so is everyone else's, essentially), but they did actually exist.
