How high will 1333 allow an i7 cpu overclock?

debating whether to return for 1600 or not

1333 was 129$
1600 is 169$

both are free shipping

not looking for too high an overclock; maybe 3.7-3.9Ghz with HT on for NLE

Using the 6x multiplier you could hit BCLK of 222 before exceeding your RAM speed (6x222 = 1332MHz).

BCLK of 222 with an i7 920 would get you to 4.44GHz assuming the rest of your system is up to the task.

No.

The X58 OCs with a BCLK as the base. The 920 is locked at 20x, possibly 21x (or even 22x if I'm not mistaken) if your mobo can lock the turbo on. But assume 20x for easier calculations for now.

The mobo can set the memory speed at 6x,8x,10x, or 12x.

So as explained above, with a 6x on your memory, you can hit a BCLK of about 222, which nets a 4.44 with a 20x mult on the CPU.

Your goal seems to just have your BCLK near 185-195, so 1333 memory can handle it easily with 6x. You might be able to do 8x but that's a stretch. If you feel a strong urge to do 8x, then you'll have to go 1600 RAM. Otherwise, save the money.

Minor note: If you don't run your memory at full speed (or even if you do), you might be able to lower the timings on it. See here for more details.

Try this.

i7 OC is easy. Just bump up BCLK. Test for stability and repeat until it fails and then lower it a bit. You might not even need to mess with voltage at all. There are plenty of articles out there on Google. Also, some Youtube videos if you want to mess with the other settings.

running 20's across the overclocking i7 landscape and 180 Bclck; CPU multi 20, QPI multi 20, UnCore 20, and Mem multi of 7 = 3600 every clock except mem-clock which is at 1260 - will this work or is something i don't know hindering the overclock?
