I think it's 3.4 or 3.5 and then 3.6 for high honors and 3.8 for highest honors. It probably depends on the school though.

It depends on the school and the program. When I graduated in 2005, every college (Engineering, Science, etc.) had its own cutoffs for the honors. These cutoffs were changed every year to reflect the distribution of grades from the previous year's graduating class to ensure that only the top x% got highest honors, only the top y% got high honors, and only the top z% got honors.

All schools are different. My school uses the weighted GPA scale (meaning 5.33 for A+ in an honors/AP class, 5.0 for an A, 4.66 for an A-, etc.). Here, Merit Roll is like 3.0+, Honor Roll is like 3.5+, and High Honor Roll is 4.0+. We also have something called Summa Cum Laude which is 4.3+.

at UT Austin for Natural sciences I think it was top 20% for honors. I had a 3.72 I think and just barely made honors.

Its almost always based on the top x% of the class, so it depends. Liberal Arts degrees will be higher since more people do well. :)
