How high do you think I can get my FSB?

I do not have all of my parts yet, but I want to be knowledgable when I get them. I ordered 2x256mb (plan to put them in a Dual Channel setup) of Crucial PC2700. At Cas2, how fast do you think these chips can go? I will be running on an EPoX 8RDA+ mobo (nForce2) with a Tbred B XP1700+

Thanks!

Well since the chips are rated at 166.5 MHz at CAS2 then I would expect then to probably be able to stand 200 MHz at CAS3 given my experience with overclocking Crucial memory. More than likely it's going to be the processor that holds you back. I haven't seen many Tbred B's get over 200 MHz FSB without some serious active cooling.

@cas2 do you think i'd be able to get much higher than 166mhz?

Thanks again!

With my PC133 from Crucial I could get up to about 150 or so at CAS2. If their DDR is anything like regular SDRAM then yeah you can probably go a lot higher than 166 @CAS2.

I thought nForce 2 automatically unlocked the Tbred B or something like that... I don't think my cpu will be able to pump much more than 12.5 @ 166mhz anyway :)

I wouldn't worry about going over 12.5. Just keep pushing up the FSB, the multiplier doesn't do anything for performance, just the FSB.

Oh ok, thanks :)

So you're telling me, once I max out the fsb at say 166, and the multiplier is still at 11, I shouldn't both trying for 11.5 or 12 or anything like that?

Thanks :)

According to overclocking enthusiasts, the best overclocks occur when you keep the multiplier as low as possible (8 is good) while raising the FSB as high as your system will allow without crashing or suffering instability, which sometimes requires raising your CPU vCore a little (mine's at 1.85v, and my VDimm is at the default 2.63v).

I too have the Epox 8RDA+ and am running 11x @ 194MHz on an Athlon 2400+ with 1 stick of Corsair 512MB CAS2 set to the fastest memory timings. I found that I couldn't go very high with just an 8x multiplier, so 11x/194MHz seemed like a good balance for me, though I'm still playing around with this. But no matter what BIOS settings I used I can't seem able to hit a 200MHz FSB, nor was Anand in his review.

Ok so I should be able to hit ~190 with my Crucial memory, 11x190 isn't bad at all for a chip that should be 11x133 :)

Bill

Edit: people have told me the 1700+ Tbred B can handle that kind of speed, is this true?

I don't know. But if your system can handle it, that's what matters :)

So the best bet would to be start at 11x166, set my system up. Then slowly increase the fsb? How will I know i've reached the max fsb?

You'll have hit max FSB once you start getting crashes or errors on Prime95 or Memtest86.

If you're looking for highest FSB, put the multiplier right down, and put the FSB up until you get to about the stock speed of your processor (~1.5GHz). Once you've got the Max FSB you can do stably, increase the multiplier until you get the max total CPU speed without being unstable :)

I have an 8RDA+ and a Tbred B 1700+, currently sitting at 206x10 for 2.06GHz :)
