How high can one safely overclock?

I got this rig up to a 260MHz bus and 3.3+GHz but I backed it back down out of fear.
Looked like it coulda gone higher.

If you don't mind, what settings are you using in the Advanced chipset settings and in the SoftMenu. I'm unable to get past 235 Mhz FSB.

IC7-G Max II
2.6c retail (using Arctic Silver)
2x256 Kingston HyperX PC4000 DDR (3-4-4-8)
FSB:DDR 1:1

235 Mhz is the farthest I could boot successfully. Is the Memory the limiting factor?

Sure, here's a copy of a post I made in another thread recently:

I have the Max II.

If you want an overclock like mine, the settings are very simple:
Go into the softmenu in BIOS and make these settings:
CPU Operating speed "User Defined"
Ext Clock "250/66/33"
N/B Strap "PSB800"
DRAM Ratio "5:4"
AGP Ratio "Fixed"
Fixed AGP/PCI Freq "66/33"

CPU Power Supply "Default"

I have not changed any voltages or memory timings.
DRAM settings are by "SPD"

Game Acceleration is "Auto"

My DRAM settings by SPD are 2,7,3,3

I would think your PC4000 RAM should be fine.
I think your 1:1 FSB setting could be problematic.

Yes it is probably your memory. I had a realy hard time with the Kinston PC4000 with my board. You can either buy some different ram or run the 5:4 ratio and see how high your CPU will go.

Push it as high as you can go if you're still at default voltage. My 2.6 goes up to 3.5 at default. It will go slightly higher but I don't want to up the voltage because my case doesn't cool too well.
