i got a k6-2 running at 450 stock right nw. i'm wondering if i can get it to 500 (100x5). or would i be able to get it at 448 (112x4). or 475 (95x5).
will any of those give it more performance? i was thinking getting the bus to 112 would, but may cause to much heat?

Should be able to make 5X100 (500mhz) or possibly 550mhz...? Almost every 400-450 K6-2 that I have had did this no problem and with stock cooling... Heck buy a good HS/fan and twist it tight... :D

but if i upped the bus and lowered the multiplyer wouldn't that give higher performance for the same clock, or would be pushing too much heat there?

also would i need to increase the voltage to do this

If you can use a 112MHz fsb then do so. 4 x 112 for 448MHz will give your more performance than 5 x 100 for 500MHz. Try upping the core voltage to 2.3-2.5v and running 112 x 4.5 for 504MHz.

K6-2's are made on a .25 micron die and run hot anyway. Give it a try and see. I used to lap the back of the cpu because the metal plate was almost always concave, not making real good contact with the heatsink.

how will i know when i've gone too high? will i ont be able to boot or will i get artifacts?

how can i test the temperature? i don't think my BIOS monitors it, but is there a software solution?

You won't get artifacts, that is from overclocking your video card to high. You computer won't boot into windows, will make into window but give you errors, lock up in windows, blue screen or fail to run programs without dropping out to the desktop. If your computer appears to run stable at overclocked speeds, run Prime95 for at least a few hours and make sure you don't get any errors.

the k6 chips i've had never overclocked very well. so i would say yes. but if u plan on overclocking, why don't u shell out some loot and get a duron or celery rig? or go ballz out and get a northwood :p

i got a new computer, so i wanna give overclocking a go, because if i screw it up it's not as much of a problem

if thats the case, take off the heatspreader, put on some good thermal grease and a big 'ol socket A heatsink.
jack the voltage a touch, and go as high as you can. 5.5x100 or 6x100 seem within the realm of possibility.

but if you care about it, leave it stock hsf and everything, and jack it to 5x100 or similar..

blah.. </ramble mode=OFF>

On K6-2's, the L2 cache runs at the same speed as the FSB, as does the memory as always. So the most benefit would come from getting the FSB to 112, if you M/B can hack it.
