With stock cooling, how high can a P4 2.8 go?
I know that a lower speed is usually the subject for overclocking. Just curious if anyone oc'd an already fast P4.

Thanks,

The stock HSF's can do pretty well simple way to test it overclock it check the temps and if they stay within range then your fine. Upping the voltage usually is the culprit for high temps. No reason you cant run 150 to 160 fsb with stock cooling if you dont have to raise the voltage to 1.75 or more.

Oh god! If I see the word overclock or "oc" one more time I'm going to hurl!!! :p

Seriously though, I think 3-3.3 Ghz will be about the max you can do, and I wouldn't recommend going over 1.7V on that P3 if you want it to last!

Haha! Yeah, you said you didn't want to see the word, but you say it in this post. Make up our mind! :D

Glad you asked, no really!!. I was getting to the part where I tested My P4 rig with my Ti4600. Everyone has given me great links for oc'ing my Ti4600. Just wanted to know what the Northwood could do also. This is kind of a spinoff from another thread in video.

Yap! :) I've been able to get the 2.8 up to 3.024GHz, 21x144 at 1.675V. Was able to achieve higher, but this was completely stable, so I settled.

Couple of things.

All P4s 1.6 - 2.8 use the same HS fan. The 3.06 gets a bigger one. That means that the stock unit is good for ~ 2.8 max...sort of. The 3.06 runs hotter because it's faster AND because it has HT. You should be able to run ~ 3.0 GHz or so, but you are near the limit to start.

That PC2100 ram may limit you also. At stock speed, you are already running DDR266 without even using the 4:5 ratio.

I'd try a conservative approach on your system. Try 140 - 145 FSB or so and see if you can get to 3 GHz. Again, your rig because of the high CPU default speed and slow DDR is not really a great candidate for overclocking, but give it a shot.

You have got to be kidding!!! Are you running GB chipset board?

Edit: Actually, forget GB, since it wasn't out 2 month ago. Which board are you
using, since it says QDR?

Interesting theories oldfart, I have some to add to that:

It doesn't make a big difference how cool the P4 runs, it will still overclock about the same whether you have a $50 Swiftech cooler on there or the stock cooler. Matter of fact, the stock intel cooler does a fine job. The mounting mechanism makes sure the heatsink gets VERY good contact with the CPU. Intel did go to a bigger cooler for the 3.06, but that doesn't mean you can't get above 2.8 with the stock cooler. It will just run pretty warm since the stock cooler has a pretty slow fan.

The 3.06 does run hotter than the others, but the 3.06 has some major differences from the previos C1's, aside from Hyperthreading. There is a slightly different stepping on this chip, although no one but an Intel tech could tell you for sure what that means. For one thing, it can easily overclock to 3.6 GHz from the sources I have read, but I have heard the 2.8 is not a very good overclocker.

I also remember you telling us what your motherboard was. I can't remember off the top of my head, but it is not one of the first boards one thinks of when overclocking. I think it was a SIS chipset wasn't it?

In short, go ahead and overclock and see what she'll do, as anything is better than stock. Just don't get any wild dillusions of grandeur.

Also, how fast can you run your DDR? If you can run your DDR faster than the front side bus, you will see a nice boost over running it in sync, before you even start overclocking. My Abit IT7 has a 3:4 ratio. The difference between that and 1:1 is about 1,000 3DMarks. (2001SE)

My board is the Original Abit IT7 MAX
QDR means Quad Data Rate. All P4s are QDR, Quad Pumped

Actually it does 173mhz but crashes about 3 hours into Prime95... runs everything else though.
At 170mhz it will loop Prime95/3DMark 2001SE for 24 hours with no problem
