The nearest I have been to someone who has died was the next room while sleeping. I know this is dark, but it makes me wonder, how many people have truly been close to death.

I would say so; my point of inquiry is the supposition that many people joke about it, but have never really been close to it and are truly afraid of it.

Fearing the inevitable is not only irrational but a waste of time.

I watched my mother die in front of me from a stroke.
I have not been the same person since.

Agreed.
On topic: I was in the ski patrol for a while, and a kid snapped his neck doing a flip on the run I was responsible for at a time I was on duty. Feel free to figure the rest out yourself.
along with that, see the first line in my sig.

I find dead mice all the time and found one of my puppies dead firsthand, but human death I have never been first hand at the scene. I believe that it is a necessary part of our existence but our culture shields us from this pain unlike the rest of the world.

i guess watching a movie like final destination didn't make you feel any better about that :Q!
dying from old age is one thing. Dying at 45 from a stroke in front of your kids is something else.Originally posted by: Neurorelay

My condolences; my fear is my grandmother. For the last few years I have lived in the same house as her taking care of her knowing that she will pass. I fear the day I find her gone from this world. This is the same house that my grandfather passed in while I slept in the room nearby.

Got shot in the hip. And no, I never worried that it might have been me.
