how have you liked your maytag, whirlpool, or kitchenaid dishwasher?

My parents need a new dishwasher, and I'm thinking of getting them one. I can get better deals on maytag, whirlpool, and kitchenaid brands so I was focused on those. What do you have and how has it behaved? How long have you had it? What did you pay for it?

There's a ton of models with a lot of features and I don't know what's total BS and what's actually worth it. Steam cleaning, silverware blast, "auto cleaning adjust" all seem like silly buzzwords that don't mean anything... but what do I know.

Kitchenaid also seems to command a premium. Are they really worth it? Seems like a good 200-300 more for a "base model" over the others.

Our KitcheAid dishwasher was PURE CRAP. Nonstop issues with it. Lasted about 6 years. Bought a Bosch and it is awesome.

Edit: As far as "options" go too... honestly who uses them? Put dishes in. Put in soap and go. We never use any of the options on our Bosch. Wait. That's a lie. I use the "Eco" wash cycle almost exclusively. Whats funny is I bought the one with a timer for $150 more because our previous KitchenAid was loud and it was annoying to hear it running in the evening. The Bosch is so quiet we've never once set the timer on it.

Get a full stainless steel tub.

Make sure you get nylon racks. Cheap metal racks suck as they start rusting away to nothing.

Personally I have a basic whirlpool that was rated well in consumer reports and I'm happy with minus the metal racks.

Make sure to get a full stainless tub and a nylon racks like the others posted. Cycles don't mean much as most people find a setting they like and just use that. Kitchen Aid is still owned by Whirlpool and is okay for the price. I prefer Bosch and Samsung for dishwashers. :)

I did buy a kitchen aid washing machine about 20 years ago. Never had one problem and still continues to run.

You cannot compare the maytag/et al crap of today to yesteryear. It's sad how bad they are now.

My whirlpool dishwasher works very well. It's ~5 years old and still kicking like the day I bought it.

Whirlpool, Maytag, Kitchenaid...all the same company nowadays...
We have a Kenmore Kitchenaid dishwasher. It's been pretty good, but it's had a few "issues."
Sears had to replace the heating element twice in the first year. Apparently there was a problem with the design/construction with the first one...the last one was a revised element and has worked well for at least 5 years.

Bought this one in Jan.

http://www.lowes.com/pd_240874-46-MD...g%2Bdishwasher

Got it on a pricematch to Sears for $550. Bought it from lowes for the free delivery. Solid Dishwasher, stainless steel tub, nylon racks. Does a great job. Has water flow from both top and bottom, instead of the older style "tower" from the bottom. I think most or all of the new ones have this design. Seems to do a better job.

Best of all, wife is super pleased. Score one for the hubby.

Good to hear. I can get this one for $450 in the color wanted, though probably not at free delivery. That's probably what I'll go with.

I admit to having a brand preference for KitchenAid but, I've not bought a new appliance in the last 20 years. :D

We have a Maytag I installed September 18, 2003. I know the exact date because Hurricane Isabel hit us that evening after I finished installing it earlier that day. Only problem we have had with it was a few years back the plastic latch handle broke. It was cheap and easy to replace. Other than that it has been a champ.

I recently purchased a used Bosch dishwasher for $200 from craigslist and I love it. It's quiet and does great job.

I hate my Kitchenaid dishwasher, it's very quiet, but the dispenser sux, 9 out of 10 times the door won't open or the tablet would stick to the dispenser, so I am essentially washing the dishes without any soap, so have to rewash again. I just drop the tablet inside the tub now. Also Kitchenaid lost some of their prestige now, you can get a stainless steel basic one for $400 on sale now.

In line with other posters, be aware that Kitchenaid is not the prestigious brand it used to be. So those with older models probably do love them, but newer ones tend not to be as good.

If you Google for reviews, you'll get a lot of results. I've done it when buying appliances with good results. Just be aware that people don't generally go online to rave, just to bitch. So look for consistent issues, or somewhat frequent major issues. Assume some amount of user error and bad luck as well.

The only time our Kitchenaid has this problem is if something blocks the door from opening properly.

I have a Whirlpool that's entering it's 12th year of faithful service. All is good except for the racks which are metal and coated with some plastic shit. A couple tines on the racks have broken off.

Bought a Kenmore last year. Love it. Replaced a KitchenAid that sucked ass. Stainless tu. Is a necessity as others have mentioned.

You do know that Kenmore is just a rebranded something else...right?
It's not like they actually make their own appliances.

no
bought late 2006
died late 2010
maytag
its the control panel
junk

had to replace it twice on our kitchen aid.
Not to mention, for some reason, the Kitchen Aid was a GLUTTON for "gunk build-up" in the inside. It ALWAYS had some sort of weird, disgusting crap in all the nooks and crannies on the side.

My mom bought a Maytag (I think it was Maytag - definitely from Sears, and definitely not Bosch) a few years ago. It's broken down repeatedly since then... and she's talked to several other people with similar issues. I've heard that Bosch is by far the way to go, even if it is more expensive.
