I'm thinking about getting an LCD because this 17" is really starting to strain my eyes. Thinking about going all out for an 18-19 incher but my biggest concern is my nephews/nieces poking at the screen. As it stand, my current monitor already has too many fingerprints and I'm not always home to watch my little siblings. So how harmful is it if they keep on poking at it?

well if all your siblings are going to only poke it with their fingers, finger prints usually wash off easily from an lcd with some lense cleaner

Now if they poke/prod the screen with sharp objects (spears, halbreds, javelins), you have a problemo

So it's not harmful that they keep on pressing on the screen and distorting the colors?

Ah you mean pressing the screen? I thought you meant pointing the screen as in pointing something out cuasing a finger print

Well I poked the lcd on my calculator, now its discolored =|, don't really know about monitors though

I don't know for sure, but I can't imagine that a bunch of poking and prodding would be good for it.

its the same way.... it takes a little bit of pressing though. my brother has a laptop which has an lcd (i would think they would be comparable to a desktop one?? and you have to push down pretty hard for anything to stay.... otherwise the discoloring goes away after a while.... if it helps, we have only gotten one fingerprint to stay on the screen so far ;)

i am sure you can buy a shield or something to cover the screen though. at the place i work, the screens for the registers are all brand new lcds, and they have a hard cover over the lcd part, so you cant poke it... ruins my fun when i am bored, but protects the lcd ;)

I've poked on my laptop screen many times over the 3 years that I've owned it, and there hasn't been a problem. It's kind of cool, because when you press on it, it essentially causes little waves in the liquid that propagate outward like waves in a pond. As I've said, I've done this many times (not like I sit there doing it all day, but enough) and I've never had a problem. In fact, at the bottom of the screen where it attaches to the rest of the laptop, I can sometimes see little waves of the same sort -- I can only assume that it's because of the supports putting some sort of pressure on the LCD. Also, if I press hard enough on the BACK of the screen, I see the same effect. I do know that they're fragile and whatnot, but I think as long as you're not vigorously striking it, it'll be fine. They're probably not as resilient as CRTs overall though.

LCD's seem pretty resilient to poking...however, don't ever put 12" car subwoofers near a CRT - despite all of the cool colors and patterns you may see. You will end up having weird dark spots on your monitor for life...and you will be forced to give that monitor to your girlfriend so that you can get a pimpin' 17" LCD.

Well, maybe it is a good idea then?
