How hard will it be to get launch Haswell?

Mobo just died (i think - either the MOBO or the CPU, or both), which means an upgrade is in order. Was running a phenom II x6 1055T, so whether it is to a IVB or HSW, the jump will be pretty large. Currently torn between waiting for Haswell or taking advantage of some of the better sales & combo deals now appearing for the 3770k.

One of my considerations is how difficult it will be to get HSW at launch. This would be a first for me - buying a CPU at launch. So I don't really know what to expect. Will they be tough to come by? How long should I expect to wait if I'm not able to get one right away?

And, if you're going to recommend going with the 3770K, what would be a good price point to wait for/expect/hope to see in a bundle?

I am in Canada. Thanks!

I take MicroCenter as my benchmark for prices :
3570K - $189.99 (occasionally $169.99 like this weekend) + $40 discount on mobo
3770K - $229.99 straight up

Yeah I just noticed the $229 at microcenter. That's impressively cheap - and sadly not in Canada. I could jump across the border, but it would be a full day event. Add on $60 in gas, and I'm hitting $290. Assuming no other expenses.

Usually very easy to get hold of. Even a week or two before release. Distributors have gotten CPUs the last month or so.

-it's a good mb that might be a issue with haswell imo time wise .
-most will have the usb chipset issue knowing that - will it affect bios updates 1 year from now ?with 2 versions of the same mb's ?.

-should add
with the vrm on the cpu are any mb's going to have revision after release in addition to that[ 2 so far]? seems like a mess to me. not trying to put anyone off but there has been nothing about these issues that I've seen on the net.
just like sb mb's came pci-e 3.0 ready ,all you have to do is replace the mb re switching chips not rated for pci-e 3.0 in sli.[with ib]

Where do you normally order from? I went ahead and got a Sandy Bridge last fall when Ivy Bridge was the chip to get. I didn't regret it either, as there was a better selection of boards with more mature BIOSes, IMO. Still runs much cooler than my Kentsfield, even with a mild overclock.

I say "buy now and get a deal."

I typically buy from NCIX, Newegg, or Canada Computers. If I'm in a pinch, tiger direct. Newegg in Canada is not as competitive as it is in the USA, probably because they still ship a lot of stuff from their American warehouses.

I've now discovered that my CPU is in tact, my mobo is toast though. This changes the game a bit. hmm.......

when new stuff comes out there are always serious bugs, like spontaneous crashes or stuff not turning on/off. its better to get ivy bridge now

Yeah, down to how much you like your system, now that you have the idea of a new build running around in your head, lol. Newegg looks to have some decent boards still available:

Exactly.

Not sure what to do. Now I'm thinking get a half-way decent am3+ board, run my x6 until steamroller comes out and get one of those as a drop in upgrade. Seems that steamroller will be am3+ and all are expecting it to be drop in upgrade. The x6 isn't that bad... games well with my 7970. This also keeps some dough in my pocket.... not a bad thing.

I won't be holding my breath for SR @ AM3+. Although it's not impossible the more probable scenario is that SR will first come to FM2 platform (and stay there when it comes to desktop space). AM3+ might see some sort of 8370 and that's about it IMO. 6T on FM2 should be good for mainstream segment in 2014 and after that comes a new socket which will mean new memory standard, new cores, new iGPU.

If I were you I would find a good deal on 3570K+MB and OC it.

I'd just get a nice AM3+ motherboard and continue using what you have. Even if Steamroller doesn't come out on the same socket, you can still upgrade to a nicer FX 8350 down the line.

A lot cheaper to just buy a board for now.

I got all the major components on my current system at launch (mobo/CPU/GPU) and no issues. To say there are ALWAYS SERIOUS bugs is quite simply false. There is a known USB 3.0 bug with Haswell, but hardly that serious and the vast majority of users will never even encounter it.

Don't think it will be that hard to get hold of. It's not a hugely anticipated CPU, and demand for desktop CPUs in general isn't that great.

really, you seriously think most people wont ever plug a usb 3 flash drive into their haswell machine? would you buy a haswell system on lauch day knowing that bug is there? i wouldnt. thats just one bug that we know of. whenever ive bought early theres always been something that was enough of a problem that i now realize its worth waiting a few months

You should understand the bug first. Its no problem plugging in a USB 3 flash device.

As stated above, the problem isn't plugging in a USB 3 flash drive. And yes, I plan on buying a MacBook Air as soon as I can order a Haswell equipped one.

I use it primarily for gaming (7970 x 1, with the expectation that I will add a second at some point), but also for media consumption - nothing in photoshop, no video editing, etc. Res is 1080p. So really not looking for something that must be beastly, but I do want it to last as long as possible.

It seemed pretty clear that steamroller would be am3+ based on what I've read. What makes you believe otherwise? Or just hopeful for newer tech?
