Every modern president should have a handle on scientific principles. Our current president is completely deficient in this. It gets worse, he dismisses science if its findings are inconvenient for his personal agenda. Worse than that, he does this publicly. As a role model he's a failure. If you have children, you should be appalled with his example and convey this to them.

It would be easier to list the things Trump isn't deficient in:
Golf
How to stiff contractors, etc.
Lying
P**** grabbing

Are you sure about that list?

Golf - he cheats at golf
Lying - he can't even keep his lies straight
Pussy grabbing - he has to pay them off

I'll give you stiffing contractors though, he's great at it.
Weaseling out of his obligations: 6 bankruptcies.

Yes, but he knows a lot about golf from a sports junkie side.

Sagan pretty much called it in the mid 90s on the trajectory of the US. We're slowly rotting from the inside and half the country is embracing it. I'm not sure the country can recover from another 4 years of this administration.

He is good at congratulating himself and over the top bragging. Can't think of anything else

This gives a fair idea:

I guess the title should have been how many countries weep for Americans.

But many have taken Trumps lead and banned people coming from shithole countries from entering their country.

It's more Horror than Laughter.

Yes, and it's at Trump, his enablers and his full kool-aid supporters, not the entire country. The majority of Americans seem to largely be in line with where the rest of the developed world is on most issues. It's that crazy sect that goes all in on Trump that is insane.

It's sort of fascinating; what is the explanation for it? Why has it happened in America and not elsewhere? A political cult that have divorced themselves from reality. Has this happened before elsewhere? etc. etc. If you can understand it, or find other examples of it, maybe there is a solution.

Right now, it frighteningly looks like violence is going to be the end game. Quite possibly after a Trump loss in November, between then and January. Those nutters are going to be off the rails in those circumstances and Trump will be pumping them full of madness. With his gang of enablers spreading conspiracy theories to the flock as well.

I really hope it just ends in a loss in November, him pissing his pants for a while. A few ridiculous lawsuits, baseless claims of voter fraud and him eventually slinking off. But it just doesn't fit with the way he has been doing things. He must be terrified of what is going to happen to him once he is out of that office, I don't see him giving up until he is literally forced out.

Demon Haunted World is a great read. I highly recommend it for a taste of sanity in these insane times.

First thing that comes to mind for a comparison of cult madness (I'm no historian, however) is the tulip craze.

Now, what will happen in the wake of Trump being defeated in November. Obviously the worse he loses, the less insane reaction there will be. I mean, if you wake up on Nov. 4 and see that your man lost huge, you have to think a whole lot of people saw things differently from the people who thought DJT was some kind of messiah.

I have question, though. Why are so many here pretty certain that Trump is in very serious jeopardy of being convicted of serious crimes and will likely face prison time after leaving the White House? I'm not saying they're wrong, they may be perfectly right. What are the details?

Trump is all conspiracy theories and so are his base and so are all the Trumpies within my family/relatives. I don't know what it is, but they simply can not accept that anything is what it is. Trump and his base MUST ALWATS BELIEVE that everything has an ulterior motive. NOTHING can be taken at face value...NOTHING!!! Presidential elections, they must always vote for the odd guy, i.e. Ross Perot or Ralph Nader and most certainly Donald Trump. ANYONE mainstream from the mainstream political parties can never be trusted in their mind, or... must be part of that deep dark mass global conspiracy.

What I find really funny is... that those who believe in conspiracy theories fail to realize that Donald Trump IS HIMSELF the ultimate conspiracy theory. And this witch doctor who Trump enjoys tweeting about so much is herself the ultimate conspiracy theory. I can't understand why something mainstream would justify a conspiracy theory while some nutcase like Donald Trump and the witch doctor does not justify as a conspiracy theory??? I don't get how their mind works? Is it random thinking? Is it picking and choosing? Is it the toss of a coin? HOW DOES THEIR MIND WORK???? Now THAT is the question....

I was thinking this morning. Some people prefer lies to truth. It suits them. Their whole life is a lie. Truth frightens them. The more they embrace a culture of lies the easier it is for them to avoid having to face their demons. It's the paradise of neurosis. Trump is a perfect hero for such people. He counters everything with a lie. He makes things up on the fly. His perfect (in his mind) excuse? He claims to be a genius, to have all the answers, to be the only one with the answers. To be the best, simple as that. The fact that he doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about is irrelevant to his followers. They like that resolute attitude. Life is easier if you take that stance. Conscience, culpability don't factor in. I'm number one, doesn't matter how stupid I am, how wrong I am in the moment, what happened 10 minutes ago, what will happen in 10 minutes. No sense arguing with such people.

PS, concerning the conspiracy theories of Trumpies....

Face Masks = conspiracy theory.
Hillary Clinton = conspiracy theory.
Covid 19 = conspiracy theory.
Dr Anthony Fauci = conspiracy theory.
Nancy Pelosi = conspiracy theory.
Witch doctor = NOT conspiracy theory.
Clorox to treat Covid = NOT conspiracy theory.
Collusion with Russia = NOT conspiracy theory.
Trump and Soviet operatives = NOT conspiracy theory.
Trump/Putin secret phone calls = NOT conspiracy theory.
Hydroxychloroquine = NOT conspiracy theory.

NONE of this is, in any way, logical. None of this in any way makes sense. This goes beyond logic and normality, this can only be brain damage. This has to be some sort of brain damage or brain illness. And you know what THAT means??? Almost half of America has brain damage or brain illness AND.... that half of America is voting. THEY ARE VOTING!

I'm not sure what there is to even recover. The America that people thought existed never actually did, and we're stuck realizing that its all been a sham.

It would be easier to list the things Trump isn't deficient in:
Don't forget, he's also better than anyone I know of in telling everybody around him how hot and attractive his own daughter is.

He is good at congratulating himself and over the top bragging. Can't think of anything else
Dumpy is according to those in the know a more than fair golfer inherently, but he bends the rules and outright cheats like a mad mofo on top of that. And he doesn't truly seem to be aware of his own cheating either, he simply sees it as an expression of how great he is. The greatest, even.

If one googles "donald trump golf cheating", the first story to pop up contains an anecdote of how Dumpy's mind works.

“Whenever I open a new golf course, I play the official opening round and then I just call that the first club championship,” Reilly recounts Trump as saying. “There you go! I’m the first club champion!"

Right! Club champion, easy as pie. Totally legit!

Carl Sagan was an unbelievably smart and well-spoken man. His passing truly diminished the human race as a whole.

...Or maybe the man just went home, I don't know. I'll have to hope that that's what happened.

How frighteningly few are the persons whose death would spoil our appetite and make the world seem empty. - Eric Hoffer

I started reading that Demon piece last night. I believe it's the first Sagan I've read. I'm struck by the fact that he got a better education than I did. U of Chicago, evidently, seriously wanted their undergrads to get a rounded/thorough education.

You mean he wasted his time on things other than math and science, like art, and culture.
