You need to be strong, in good shape and have good balance. My
father rows and he's told that those shells are really tipsy. As
for the races, I believe they are around the 500m, 1000m, 1500m
or 2000m-range depending on the number of people (1-8).

Not hard, its just take practice, practice, and more work out on a rowing machine.

Length of the race is all depend on what regattas that you are on.

Single & double are the hardest to control, while quad & octuple sculls are a little easier. The rowing distances is relatively short, at 500~2000 meters & <12 minutes.

Rowing is the best exercise that your can get. It is a great cardiovascular exercise and uses every muscle in you body. It will take a little time to get your rhythm right, but once you get it, not thing physically feel better after your team mate fish you out of the water after you won a 2000 meters regatta.

I had some friends who did it at Georgia Tech...it was so much the rowing that got them, it was the constant training...they woudl do stadium runs for an hour, then run about 10 or so sprints up the hill in the middle of campus. Puke was everywhere. Chicks dug them though.

Not a hard sport to master.. but a pretty hard sport to be good at.. You need to be very strong(You need very strong forearms, biceps, triceps, pictoral, amongst about 100 different back muscles). You also need super timing skills.. That is extreemly important in group events.

Dont let the training scare you, you woudl be surpsised what your body can do when its pushed hard enough.
