how hard is it to self repair a bike?

it's a 10 year old diamandback sorrento 21 speed mountain bike. the right side gear shifter (1-7) doesn't work, and the bike generally needs a tune-up. the local bike shop wants to charge me $75 for an overhaul (whatever that means), + other repair costs, totalling about $110. i don't even think i could get that much for the bike if everything was working fine. advice?

If you have never worked on a bike before, consider this to be a learning experience if you want to learn. Otherwise, that price isn't really outrageous for that kind of work.

YEP, although you could always get a second estimate.

Bikes are pretty easy to work on for the basic stuff, but you may need a few specialized tool (crank puller, bottom-bracket wrench, cone wrenches, nipple wrenches). Your shifter problem is probably just a cable and derailer in need of lubrication and adjustment.
