How hard is it to put together an e-mail server hosting around 10-20 e-mail accounts. I want like unlimited space as to like file dl's etc etc. This is going to be for work running off of a cable connection.

About 5 minutes max for a newbie, very easy.

What's your monthly budget?

Easy, if you use the right server software.. But make sure your ISP allows you to do this.

Here's an example, most (of the good) webhosts will give you a control panel (Plesk, Ensim, H Sphere or the popular cPanel) where everything can be done by clicking here and there.

cPanel look in the middle top where it says E-Mail, you can check your mail using Outlook Express/Eudora, check it using Webmail, create, edit and delete e-mail accounts with a few clicks.

Most importantly be sure to keep your os and mailserver caught up with all security updates, and don't run an open relay.

Yep, it's very nice, powerful and somewhat easy to use (depending on the version and skin used).

Nope. Look up a program called "Hermes". All you have to do is set a few settings and launch it. Then tell your domain host to point mail from the domain to your IP.

All I can say is don't run Sendmail. That thing is so bloated that you'd spend half your time just trying to get the configuration the way you want it. Search for something else, perhaps like QMail.
