How hard is it to rip out carpet and put in ceramic tile?

That's what the hardibacker board is for. It gives you a rigid surface to adhere the tile to.

Well, he does live in Michigan, which almost certainly means a basement, so the floor is going to be a lot less rigid, even with the board.

And exactly what is that board attached to? We have no idea what the structure is like. Ain't worth taking the chance...
