How hard is it to mod a X850XT into single slot?

Microcenter is having a sale tomorrow on X850XT and I'm thinking of picking it up. But the problem is that its dual slot, so it won't fit without some sort of mod (I don't need the dual slot cooler, got an extra Zalman vf700 around). Is the easiet way to just straight out cut it through the middle? Also, I was wondering if there is anyway I can just exchange the metal bar with another one. (say taking the single slot bar off of a 6600gt and fitting it on a 850xt).

Any ideas & suggestion would be helpful.

to the op: i'm not quite sure what you are asking. doesnt the Zalman vf700 take up two slots as well? so what would be the purpose of replacing the stock with it?
