I currently had a auto and now am considering getting a 5sp car. How hard is it to learn well enough to be able to drive? LMK how long it took you and if you had any problems. My friend says its easy and that it shouldn't take me long. Is he "joshin" me? Thanks! =)

If you watch someone do it, it helps the basic concept. It's not hard to learn. In the beginning I can almost guarantee that you will need to think of what gear to be in. Later on it comes in mindlessly.

Once you learn, it's like riding a bike, you'll never forget.;) Took me 1/2 an hour the first time...only because I used to watch my dad when he gave me rides to school.

Took me about two weeks to become fluid with it. You cringe when you hear the gears grind on your first few days. But I'll say, I'll never go back to automatic again, makes driving the car a fun thing to do.

It will take at least 2 or 3 days to learn how to do it consistently, and then a couple weeks to become fluent with it. You'll be suprised quickly it will become second nature...

You can do it. Pick a nice deserted area to go practice with someone who can give you pointers and you'll be A-ok.

I just went through this last month :). I kept driving my auto car to work and stuff for about a week and just cruised around my neihborhood until I got comfortable but I couldn't have probably been good enough to get around the second day aslong as I didn't get stopped on a hill with someone on my butt. I have become fairly decent at it now but I still stall it every now and again and I still have some problems with steep hills. It is a lot more fun than the auto but today I did a lot of city driving and my clutch leg is worn out :).

Kewl, I'm gonna go look at a car hopefully tomorrow (a 95' Neon). It's a 5sp. Thats why. Hopefully I learn quickly. I can auto-shift pretty well when racing. Is it something like that?

its easy if you got a good teacher who can teach you the basics.
Clutch in - gear shift - clutch out
BTW getting off first gear / reverse is the hardest.

Also remember on a slope use Handbrake to hold position, put in gear release clutch when you find it pulling realease handbrake.

You can drive it around the city with a couple of practice most likely. I think that locating the sweet spots on the car and getting to shift really well might take a couple months to fully get in tune with the car :) The couple months are just for those lightning shifts that I love to do oh-so much

"auto-shift when racing"

That's one facet of it. The other, and more difficult part, is learning to use the 3rd pedal that so many life-long automatic users don't even know exists. You have to kinda' ease into it each time you change gears or else you'll go *KACHUNK* and stall the motor. Have fun:)

if you have the money, find a cheap pos car, like 200 dollars. of course standard. then learn to drive it. if it breaks down, who cares..

then you'll be set.

first time i drove a standard, didn't stall once, so it's not hard..
it might suck real bad to go out and buy a new car, and do alot of harm to it if you didn't know how to drive it.. i'm just rambling now.

5sp = good ; Auto = bad

I hate automatics. They take they fun out of driving!
My first vehicle didn't have power steering, either. I loved that too.

Man I remember when I learned to drive 5spd last summer. My dad was a pretty bad teacher in my opinion. He used to teach me in a way that I guess I understood wrong. At first I could never even get the car in first gear cause of him. He used to tell me to clutch in, put it in first, and then let the clutch up slowly and right before I let it out to give it a little bit of gas. So I used to try it all day long and stall, stall, and stall. Finally I did it my way and I got it. I clutch in, throw it in first, then as I let the clutch up slowly I go giving it very little gas (1,000-1,200rpm I am guessing), and this way worked for me because they blend in together therefore giving it a smooth start. Once you learn how to get into first gear driving is easy. Reverse is a lil bit of a pain to get used to, but its easy once you get used to it. Now unlike when in 1st, when you are in reverse the car rolls back (thats what manual's are known for) easy so you don't have to give it much gas if any at all (depending on the incline of the surface). I clutch in, throw it in reverse, then I let it roll back. Once I feel the car is not moving enough I go slightly tapping the gas while having the clutch halfway up (but not all way out), and this allows the car to back up smoothly without jerking (because if you let the clutch out and tapped the gas the car would jerk). If going down a hill, you most likely won't even need to give it gas, and you'll be able to measure when and when not to give the car gas after a few weeks of driving. Just remember to practice all the time, and it will become second nature. It took me about 3 days to get the jist of it. And it took about a full month to get used to driving normally without error. Hills used to be my worse nightmare. But you'll learn that when you are on a hill to let the clutch out and give it gas quicker, because if you don't the car will roll back fast. And this takes the most time to learn because its hard to practice on a hill without having cars behind you to worry about. I always hated hills because it put the most pressure on me because I was so scared to fvck up and it would roll back and hit someone. But if you are careful it will never happen. I hope this helps you out on your journey to learn how to drive manual transmission. Good Luck, I am sure you will enjoy it alot more than automatic. Ever since I learned 5spd I will never go back to automatic ever again. :)

I taught my friend in an hour. Basically I took him to this parking lot that had a big hill, stuck him in the drivers seat, and spent an hour making learn how to balance. The only hard part is from stop to 1st gear, and then to 2nd gear. The rest is cake.

Kewl, thanks you guys. I seriously hope I get it. It's either my dad or my friend thats gonna teach me. If I do get it. But if I don't, I gotta keep looking. Thanks for all the pointers! =)
