How hard is it to install keyless entry on a Scion xA?

I just got a new Scion, but I want keyless entry on it. The dealer charges $499 for it, but the OEM kit is available for around $200. Anyone ever do this? Does it just involve plugging in a module and programing, or do you have to do junk like remove door covers and the dash/splice wires, etc?

You'll have to install the actuator(sp?) motors in each door. Then wire that all into the main control box which you would typically install under the dash somewhere.

its not a hard job but its long job. i did it in my 96 civic many years back. i just hooked up to the remote start module to get the actuators to work with my remote.

definitly worth it though

Well, it's already got power locks, and the dealer claims it's something that can be installed in 30 minutes (like all Scion options). It made it sound like everything in the car is modular and can be just plugged in.

The way Scion works is all the cars come with a standard package, and then you can add accessories from a menu as needed. For instance, there's a slot where you can add an armrest, plug in an LED kit on the floor, etc. I just wondered if anyone ever added the OEM keyless entry themselves.

You're in luck. Then its just the module which gives you remote locks. Should be a really easy job.! 500$ for that. wow!

You just want the car to unlock when you press the button right? As long as the car has power door locks it's an easy thing to hook up. Go aftermarket and you could have that done for $150-200 easy. Call a few car stereo installers, they can hook you up.

Could be like my car, it didn't come with remote entry when I bought it years ago but a few of my car friends told me for $50 I could buy a remote entry thing off ebay and have the dealer program it.

It's not related to your Scion, but I've been digging the system that came in my car. As long as you have the FOB in your pocket/wallet, you lock/unlock the door without a key or pressing any buttons on the FOB. The best part though is starting the car without a key. Just get in, and turn the ignition as long as the FOB is inside the car...

I wonder if they have something like that in the aftermarket...

My wife's Lexus is like that. You just walk up to the car, open the door, get in and press the start button on the dash. As long as the key fob is in your pocket you never even have to whip it out. There is a small black button on the door handle you press when you close the door as you leave the car that locks all the doors and enables the alarm system.
