how hard is it to install a remote starter?

Hi all, installed a DEI 552T into a 2000 Dodge Intrepid tonight, worked great
EXCEPT..... The door lock/unlock wire, I couldn't find it. Techsoft said to
look for a white/green wire and I found two, both were 12v constantly and
didn't change when the door locks were pulsed. Ok, next try, other dodges use
an orange wire - find it and it shows 12v only when I press unlock (or lock I
forget which now). I then found a blue wire in the same harness behind the
fuse box that did the same thing but for the other function (whatever orange
wasn't, lock or unlock). Anyways Techsoft says that there should be only one
wire that controls the locks and to use resistors to control lock/unlock. I
tried this on both wires and got no result. They act like a regular 12v+ pulse
system, is it????? This is a non keyless version from the factory so does that
matter? I rescheduled the door locks for a later date for fear of frying a
multiplex unit, anyone know whats up with these cars?

This is interesting because I have had problems with my door locks on a
95 Intrepid since having a aftermarket alarm installed, to replace the
original keyless entry. I have had this car apart looking for a grounded
hot. No matter what I do, when I press the switch to lock the 30 amp
fuse under the hood that looks like a tooth blows and I loose
headlights, pwr seats, pwr antenna. In unlock it's fine, no problems
with any other feature of the alarm or additional sensors. Does anyone
know or have any ideas or a place to search for a fix??? It's an atv
1000.

Hello I just did a 2000 intrepid yesterday and had a tough time with the
doorlocks also.The sheet from techsoft said it was a white with dark green
stripe in the DKP.That wire did not work so I ended up going a little farther
down under the driver foot panel,the one that snaps off and ataches to the
dkp.It ended up being a white with a light green strip.It does not arm and
disarm the factory alarm though whhich i had to resceduale the car for a later
date.We did another one today and also noticed that the same wire can be
located at the bottom of the fuse box right under the dash.It is positive
trigger and you MUST use relays.I cant remember the resistor values but i
beleive it was like 620 and 7200 ohm but double check the values to be exact
but im sure its a white with a light green tracer.Hope this helps you out. Tim

You will find that the wire is white/lt green at the top of the DKP. You
need 2 resistors- a 620 ohm and a 2.7kohm along with 2 relays. Hook up is
like this:

Relay #1 85-lock wire from alarm
86 & 87- +12V
30-620 ohm resistor and connect to white/lt green wire

Relay #2 85-unlock wire from alarm
86 & 87- +12V
30-2.7k ohm resistor and connect to white/lt green wire

This is the setup that I use to use and it worked great. The brand I sell
now (Magnadyne) has a unit I plug into the alarm and replace its on-board
fuses with the correct resistor fuses. Works everytime. Good Luck.

My local Car Toys quoted $350 for the DEI 552T installed on a 1990 Toyota Corolla (birthday present for my sister). They said for another $50 they'd install a car alarm, what do you guys think?

The reason that installation costs so much is liability. If you screw up your car starter install and it catches on fire (Or starts while in "D", etc...) the insurance company CAN deny your claim.

Just imagine, your car catches on fire inside your garage.....

I bought a stereo for my wifes car a couple of years ago and they gave us a remote starter free. I was going to put it on myself, but when I opened the box there had to be 18 wires coming out of it. I paid someone else to do it.

$350 installed? Ouch...I remember when I bought my '98 civic almost three years ago...the remote starter was a $200 option (and EVERYTHING was marked up at the honda dealership, obviously...a 1" (ugly) wing was $700 here! A 1-disc cd player was a little over $500, and I *think* a cd changer was only $100 more). I got them to throw it in for free, since I couldn't get them to budge on the price of the car (paid MSRP).

The point is...maybe you should look around, and see if you can get a better deal...if this place with the high markups only had it for $200 installed, i'm sure you should be able to get a better deal elsewhere...

Here's a copy and paste from a message from a couple years ago:

Best Buy installed the #552t, which included the door locking system and a second remote for $189. Circuit City didn't have the #552t. They wanted to install the #551t and an add on door lock relay for an extra $49.

I'd say, just buy the Valet at the lowest price you can find from CC or BB. Let the kids there skin their knuckles for $30 or $40. That way, they take the heat if it gets screwed up. When mine was installed, the "30 minute" job took a couple hours because they couldn't locate certain wires to patch into. Sucks to be them!
