How hard is it to find a company that will relocate you to NYC?

I'm currently residing in California and would like to move to NYC for work. I have friends who moved to NYC first and then eventually found jobs there but I'd like to secure a position before I move. I'm an experienced professional in the audit field and could probably get in any Big 4 but when I post my resume on online job boards, I only get contacted for local opportunities. Anyone from the west coast successfully land a job in NYC? How did you do it?

Have you tried indicating (on your resume or cover letter or something) that you'd be interested in working in NYC?

Not yet but I'll keep that in mind when I'm ready to distribute more resumes to companies located in NYC.

I would apply directly on the websites of the firms that you are interested in, and make it apparent that you are interested in working in their New York offices.

E&Y, PWC, and the other big audit firms all have their own career sites, and will definitely pay to move a qualified applicant to their area.

Yea that's what I thought of doing but I'm not sure if I actually want to work for a Big 4. If I'm going to move to NYC, I'd at least want some time to enjoy life.

Contact recruiters in the NYC area. And start applying to job opportunites online. Just posting your resume isn't gong to get you anywhere fast.

He's got it right. Even the smaller consulting firms have recruiting sites. Many large companies don't even look at Monster and similar sites. Filling out all the repetitive online applications kinda sucks, but is worth it in the end.
