I'm planning the most basic $1000 model and upgrading it with 4GB of memory and a 320GB hard drive.

I know the memory is easy enough, how about the HD?

Just as hard as the memory. Remove 3 screws (same 3 actually) and then slide the dive out. The 'hardest' part would be the re-install of OS X.

The trickiest part for me was finding a Torx screwdriver. Other than that, it's easy.

macbook is damn easy under 5-10 minutes if you've never exchanged a hard drive out before...macbook pro is a bit tougher and takes 25-30 minutes to do.
