How hard is it to change a power supply?

Hi guys,

Well after posting a dozen messages over numerous forums about my overclocking adventures, the basic consensus is that my power supply sucks!!!

I got an email back from the TEch support guy and he said they shipped me a shine horner 340 watt power supply....by the way I have an AMD 1.4 Tbird on an Asus A7M board.......

I just got my system like three weeks ago and would think hard of sending it back to replace my power supply(enermax 350 watt or 431 watt of my choice). However, I am a newbie and if I ask them to send me a new one then I would have to do it alone.

So if I do it alone what should I know? where to go to find knowledge? should I even attempt it myself?

what ya guys think?

Step 1 unplug PSU
Step 2 open side of case
Step 3 unplug all power connections from mobo and drives you might want to make a note so you know were to put the plugs back.
Step 4 remove 4 screws on back panel of case that hold the PSU in place.
Step 5 reach in side of case and remove PSU
Step 6 do steps 1-5 in reverse.

Yup - that's about it. The anti-static precautions are rather important (don't want to fry your mobo/CPU, now do you?).

It's really easy. Unplug PSU - get it out - put new one in. The only problem you might be having is with the cabling, but we all have to stuggle with that. 20-30 minutes effort at most, if you're taking your time .

Anyone who can install a CPU on his own can swap a PSU .

Basically.. there is nothing to it as long as you know what to put in where..while being careful of ESD.

I'd like to add one step to Renob's list.

1.1 Press power button.

After unplugging the power supply it can still hold a charge for awhile due to the capacitors. Pressing the power button while the power supply is unplugged will discharge the caps and make it safer for your motherboard when you are pulling on that power cable that always seems to be stuck on there.

It is a very easy change out.

Yep real simple,make sure the PSU voltage is set correctly on the back of PSU for your country,and make a note of the floppy drive power cable(some can go in eitherway)if you get that wrong you will fry your floppy drive,so take a minute to makesure.
