how hard is it to break into a locked glove compartment?

is it enough to prevent the random smash and grab in a parking lot?

I just bought a gps and I'm debating whether or not I need to buy a carrying case to keep it in my pocket without it getting scratched to hell, or if I'd be safe putting it in a locked glove compartment when out shopping or whatever.

Unless they see the suction cup mount. And if he takes that off, the suction cup marks on the windshield.

At least you have the doubt of "well, if he took it off the mount, did he take it with him or simply put it in the glove compartent?". Might deter people who would rather break into a car with visible goods.

you can smash a window and make off with anything in plain sight or the cd's in the arm rest in like 5 seconds... I'm pondering whether prying open the glove compartment would add enough time for the average crackhead / hooligan to not bother, or if it's really only like a one second pry and pop thing.

true but really irrelevant.

Anyway...a cars/homes are surrounded in glass that's usually not strong enough to survive a quick crowbar attack and within 5 mins they could be on their way before anyone was the wiser.

Security is important, but in a car there really isn't any true security...they can easily load a car on a flatbed if they HAD to have it.

That said a glove box can be opened in 1 second at least most of the time. Some secure a lockbox to their firewall/trunk/etc that would require cutting to remove.

Most fail because although the bolts are hidden inside the device, they pass into a part of the car you can get too.

really easy, when my radio was stolen from my car they poped open the glove box and took the faceplate for my head unit out of it
