how hard / easy is the upgrade from Win 7 32 bit to 64 bit?

I am running Vista now and was planning to do a clean install to Win 7 64 bit.

I was at a Microsoft Windows 7 Roll out today in NYC and got a Win 7 Ultimate DVD.
They only had 32 bit and will send me a 64 bit dvd. But it may take a few weeks.

If I do the 32 bit Win 7 clean install, is it an easy step to go to 64 bit?
Will I have to reinstall software like Office & Dreamweaver after the 64 bit upgrade?

I should be receiving one of the $50 pre-order Win 7 upgrade dvds from Amazon in a few days. Will that have the Ultimate version code that I can use with the Ultimate product key that I got today?

You can't do upgrades from 32bit to 64bit. You have to do a clean install.

If you can't wait your best bet would be to install the release candidate (64 bit), if you have a copy or can get one, and then you can do an upgrade to the final when you receive it in the mail.
Note: I haven't tried this myself but from what I've heard from others it will work.

You cannot officially upgrade from the release candidate to the final. But unofficially yes you can, what you have to do is change a file off of the dvd and either reburn the dvd or install it off a flash drive.

I know this works because that is what I did. I had the rc 64bit installed and then when I was able to get the final win 7 I changed that file and did an upgrade install and all is working with no issues

i'm pretty sure that hack doesn't work for 32 to 64, at least it didn't when i upgraded my wifes pc from build 7000 to RC.

You cannot under any circumstances upgrade the Windows Operating System from 32bit to 64bit.

I feel like we get this question every other day....

Thanks everyone.
This has to be a common question with Microsoft giving out the 32 bit version at the Windows launch events.

I will wait a little while.
But, if I get impatient, I will do the 64 bit Home Premium that I had pre-ordered.

From my point of view, the extras in Ultimate are more important for the encryption for a laptop that is traveling and might get lost or stolen than it is for a desktop PC at home.

It is, to say the least - but no worries 🙂

I suppose you have a reason to encrypt your files as opposed to just standard password protection?

Additionally, what OS are you running now? I thought you said you were running 32-bit Vista Ultimate as it was. If this is the case, there is no reason to format, reinstall with 64 bit Vista, and then format and reinstall (or upgrade) to Windows 7 64bit.
