How Great Is It To Have a Blackberry

I've posted about the Blackberry 7100 before. I've checked it out. It seems great. But besides the $200 for the phone, T-Mobile is going to charge an extra $20 a month for unlimited internet. I figured it was $10. But I called up and for $10 extra a month you lose your free nights and weekends and free t-mobile to t-mobile.

So I'm wondering, is it really worth it to have mobile internet? I'm on my computer plenty. I don't know if I need it.

Thanks/
-Phil

It's nice to have at times (mapquest or google in a pinch), but I generally don't use mobile data on my 7750.

They're definitely useful, but I tend to view mine as a leash (company phone).

Internet access is painful enough on my 7750, I don't want to think what it would be like on a 7100.

I have been asked to head a project for deciding the viability of Blackberry devices, and if it is deemed good, implement it. I'm interested in people asnwering the OPs question.

I agree with Gregg on that. I tried the 7100t and it is neat, but the keyboard is nuts. I hated it, but I liked the design of the phone. I have the 7750 now and I love it. Internet browsing is a bit tough, but it is doable. I run it off a BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) for email. Once you have one for a bit, you get addicted to it and can't imagine being without one.

We use blackberries extensively where I work, about 1/3 of employees have them.

BES is a must to really get full use out of them.

How are Blackberries much different than the T-Mobile Sidekick or Motorola A630?

With BES, the email is "pushed" automatically to your Blackberry without any intervention on your part (normally takes less than 10 seconds from the time it hits your mail server or desktop). You can also open attachments (ms office) and edit them as well. You don't have to have a BES to have the same features though. It will run on your desktop and forward your email as well.

Hey Cable, Viper, can you guys log into the AT forums on your bberries using MDS?
Since the last 'upgrade' to the forums, I can't.

Also, either of you running BES 4.0 yet? We've got it for testing internally, but haven't had time to set it up yet. I think I'll set it up tomorrow, I've got some free time.

I've had a blackberry since about a month after Compaq started selling them. They are great devices and amazingly useful, especially in the business world.

One thing that I do *not* like about them is their functionality as a phone. To me, it feels really clunky and difficult to use. Plus, the BB phones that I've used are REALLY fussy about proper positioning - You have to hold it just right in order to be able to hear out of the speaker. I rapidly gave up on the phone functionality and just stick to e-mail and calendaring, plus a few occasional notes that I sync up with Outlook.

can blue get the orange phones? My cingular hardware discount is only 35% and it was 50% on at&t, but I don't believe that acutally applied toward smartphone/pdas. I haven't been able to attach my FAN discount to my cingular acct

To get the 650 you'd have to switch over from what I understand.

If it's for personal use, it's not worth it. Are you really that important that you need a berry to check your emails when a friend can just call you on your cell? If it's business, why doesn't your company pay for it if it can maximize productivity?

To me, it's nothing more than a company leash.

I have the Treo 600 and hardly go on the internet with it. The dial-up speeds are unbearable. The data plan for VZW is also too expensive to go the unlimited route, so I just use my talk minutes (no extra charge) for internet. Even free this way at nighttime, I still hardly use it. The speed is a dealbreaker for me.
