How good of a BR player is the PS3?

I've been looking at getting a BR player for when I buy a new plasma. In order to get multiple uses out of a single device, I've been thinking about getting a PS3 but I've got a few questions:

1. How good of a BR player is it?
2. Does it support Netflix yet (I have a 360 and like how it's integrated)?
3. Is it a "fast" BR player?

Can't think of anything else at the moment, but any other advice would be welcome.

In it's price range it's the best Blu-ray player cus they update it the most and supports practically everything.

Yes it has Netflix but you need a disc to use it as of right now cus of the exclusivity agreement they have with the 360 but that's going to end this year and the disc is free from Netflix.

It's faster than cheaper BR players but it's not as fast as some of the more expensive ones.

It's always been one of the best. Not as fast some might say...but quite honestly that has never affected me. Netflix support is coming (fully) soon- requires a disc now afaik.

If you can afford it, buy it. It's the best single media device out there... and plays games, too. And it will never, ever be orphaned.

It's not necessarily the best *DVD* player among Blu-Ray players, but that's a sideline... And you'll only notice a difference in a big projection setup anyway.

The best thing about the PS3 is that it's one of Sony's flagship Bluray players which means they'll keep updating it to keep it up to date with the spec. And it also plays games.

I've got a couple complaints about it as a "dedicated" BR player.

1) It can be loud. My 80 gig has noticeable fan noise. Maybe the newer ones aren't as bad.
2) It has a blue tooth remote that doesn't integrate with most universal remotes without a hack or expensive add on module.
3) Doesn't fit in with other AV components, although the slims help.
4) It's fairly power hungry for a dedicated device. (again slim helps this a bit).

If I didn't have any desire for gaming, I'd probably just go with a dedicated device from Panasonic or Samsung for half the price that the PS3 costs.

Not sure if your plasma will support 3d, but rumor has it that the PS3 is the only blu ray player on the market that will get a firmware update to support 3d displays and play back 3d media.

The older 80GB's are still infinitely quieter than 360's and the Slim I just got is super quiet.

My old (release) 360 is loud, my new one (MW2) is really quiet. The Slim I have is also really quiet.

The PS3 makes an awesome bluray player and like people have said, there's very little chance it won't get firmware updates for newer disks.

3d is not something I want to pursue. To me it is just a fad, nothing more.

The remote problem concerns me, especially since I was looking at the Logitech Harmony 1100 to control everything. Hopefully there's an adapter out there.

There's a Logitech Harmony Adapter for PS3 but it runs for like $60. It has something to do with the bluetooth being the only way to control the PS3 and because the USB ports on the PS3 doesn't keep powering things that are connected to it which is why it's completely separate.

I got the ps3 slim yesterday from amazon(a week earlier,Amazon you rock!)It is very quiet, almost silent. From 15' away it is silent.Put in Star Trek in bluray, spectacular. My aged toshiba 57" rp tv shows up to 1080i and this movie looked fantastic.I'm sold.I did look at many bluray players that supported wifi, but kept coming back to the ps3 slim. The slim was 299,I also bought the remote for the player,it was 20 or so more.

If you wind up buying a PS3 Slim keep your eyes peeled for the CECH-2101A model (if you are in the US) instead of the CECH-2001A model.

They recently made a quiet revision of the PS3 Slim with the 40nm RSX chip replacing the 65nm older one which results in power and weight savings (drops the console from 73watts to 60watts draw).

I think the PS3 is a great BD player, especially since you want to get multiple uses out of it.

One of the issues already mentioned is the lack of an IR receiver, which requires you to (a) use the controller to control the BD player, (b) buy the Sony BT remote, or (c) spend $40-60 on a device like the Logitech Harmony PS3 adapter that converts IR to BT.

Another disadvantage of the PS3 compared to other BD players is that it lacks analog audio ports. If you're going to send sound over HDMI, then this is a moot point. However, if you have a non-HDMI receiver that has multi-channel audio inputs, then you could get lossless audio from another BD player but not the PS3.
