On the highest difficulty setting it takes a very long time to figure out where its going to move, i assume this is because its calculating all the possible movement scenarios. Im not really a chess fan because i suck at chess but its been about 11 years since that deep blue thing beat the chess champion guy. Could windows vista maybe do the same? Wiki says chess software is more focused on now rather than hardware.

hate playing the computer at chess because it takes so long to decide where to move.

Ya vista comes with chess. I dunno if its an ultimate only extra but it replaces that draughts game that came with XP.

Its called "Chess Titans"

Are you talking about Chess Titans? I have that on Vista Business and I'm sure it can't defeat any grandmaster worth his salt.

I hear when you go to make a move, though, it's a three step process with two verifications, and you need admin level rights.

I, like the OP, isn't a chess fan:

"Im not really a chess fan because i suck at chess"

So, I think he/she is just curios about the AI of the included game George P Burdell. :)

I haven't personally played the game, but as a MS Win Vista user, I see the humor in your Perknose! :p

It beat someone i know whos decent at chess, suppose thats a far cry from a grandmaster though.

Its just it takes so much CPU power and time to figure out where to move on level 10 difficulty i figured its calculating every possible move and figuring out the correct move to make so maybe its got a chance against a grandmaster no?. It dosent seem to be multithreaded though, cheapass microsoft.

The chess engine in Vista isn't very good (I can beat it). It's worse than the GNU-chess engine (it destroys me). I've never tried facing off GNU-chess with say Fritz/other commerical products (also destroys me) though.

There is no way it is calculating every possible move. It'd take years upon years. We haven't solved Chess yet. (Or ever) Not to mention the memory/storage it'd require.

Meh, took me 10 seconds to disable UAC on my machine. And it's a wonderful feature on my wife's machine so she won't fuck it up.

She doesn't install anything or need admin rights. So it probably still seems new to her on the rare occasion that it does pop up.

Impressive to beat it on 10. It takes me quite a bit of effort to beat it at level 7 or 8. Effort doesn't mean undo the last 5 moves after you get crushed either.
