Hmm. A Smithfield. I think it was spring, 2006 when Tom's Hardware published an over-clocking article on the 805 Smithfield.

Beauty of it is this -- the P5N32-SLI runs within spec at 1066, and is apparently "quad-core-ready."

590 nForce chipset.

If you got these things at bargain prices, I'd say that's "a decent computer."

Oh yeah. On the heatsink issue.

First, the Smithfields were "room-heaters" -- a lot of thermal power, so a good heatpipe cooler is probably a good idea.

And second, you could probably get a heatpipe cooler that would support cooling for the newer processors if you want to eventually swap out the Smithfield.

Some people would rather spend $20 on a mediocre heatpipe cooler versus $40 to $50 on a good one. For that difference, I'd just buy the best, but I wouldn't say to anyone else that they "posi-lutely abso-tively hafta do it."

Its a ES of this chip

Intel Pentium-D 3.2GHz 800MHz (2x1MB) L2 Cache Dual Core FSB 775-Pin Processor OEM

And it completely blows. A E2180 would spank it in every benchmark.

Yeah. If he wanted to start with "bottom-of-the-line," there, the 2140 is only $85. I'll be building one of those for "mom" next week. I even found a Gigabyte mATX that seems to get good notices from reseller-customers for around $65.

But the chipset -- for the P5W DH -- as I said, I believe it's i975 -- that's a known, proven, reliable chipset, with a matured set of BIOS revisions. Check again for processor compatibility, but the last time I looked, it was "quad-capable," so it should handle any of the newer C2D's.
