I'm currently using a ASrock K7VM2 mATX MB and using an old Diamond sound card and was wondering how the onboard sound compares? This MB comes with AC'97 sound. I'm just using a reg stereo setup (2 speakers,1 sub).

also comparing PCI eithernet card to onboard LAN. Would there be any significant difference?

If the AC97 is soft audio (done by processor with the AC-97 serving as a codec), it probably sucks pretty badly. My bro's EPoX 8KHA+ board has some basic AC-97, and it sounds extremely tinny and cheap. It's worth a try though.

The onboard lan quality should be quite decent unless it's using a really cheesy lan chip.

I heard great things about nForce 2 sound storm, but my experience with old skool onboard sound was horrible for gaming. As for onboard LAN, well it works well for me.

Basically the only onboard sound that I'd use for an extended period of time is the nForce2's sound (which I use 24/7). I just built a system for my Dad with the Epox 8KHA and the sound on that was so bad I threw in a cheap sound card and there was a HUGE improvement.

To denigrate all onboard sound and LAN is simply juvenile prattle based on perpetuation of ignorance. With sound, a lot of it depends on what you connect it to. Feed the onboard it to a quality stereo amp and speaker system (not the cheesy, small, computer-type speakers) and the output will often beat separate sound cards. As for the LAN, I have it on three systems and it works perfectly at the higher speed. Just remember, - all generalizations are false, including this one. (Oliver Wendell Holmes.) :)
