🙂 ok this is my first post here in Anandtech so please be "gentle" lol. anyways i like to introduce my rig, i just got into computer building and i built this sucker myself last november just for WoW (and DOom and Half Life) with a relative modest budget(1,600)
so dont judge to hard, anyways i'd like to know if my rig is good enough, great, or whatever, also what would you guys change(please no Nvidia or ATI flames, if i have one brand please suggest that one in terms of video cards). so with no further delays i introduce my rig:
Motherboard: K8V SE Deluxe
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Graphics:ATI 9800XT
Memory:1GB
HardDrive:120GB
Rom:Sony Dual CD/DVD burners
if you need anything else let me know and happy posting!!

Welcome to AT.

Yeah, I think if I was looking to upgrade something in that system it would be the videocard.

I wouldn't bother with a 6600gt because it isn't going to be that much of an upgrade. It would certainly be better, but if you could work a 6800gt into your budget, that's what I would change next.

Is there some reason you want to upgrade, or are you just asking if your system is still up to date? You're the only one that can say if it's fast enough for what you are doing 🙂

its kind of a double question. i did want to see if my system was still up to date to run current games and how far ahead and also i do want to upgrade. since i like ati i was wondering what you thought of the ATI X850 XTE(exteme platinum edition) as that is what i want to upgrade once the price goes way down, like when the 9800's went down lol. anyways i just wanted to get a basic idea of where my system stands as a whole compared to other comps out there. it seems the only upgrade i need (for now) is a graphic card upgrade which is really good i think!!thanks

If you're waiting for the price to come down, make sure you check back with us when you're actually going to buy because even if it's cheap it might not be the best buy at the time.

dont worry i will i usually shop newegg but shopping around never hurts lol. also what do you think of ATI's X850 XTE??

You mean the X850 XTPE, right?

It's arguably the fastest single card you can get (6800 ultra can beat it in a couple games).

It's certainly a nice card, but with the next generation of videocards right around the corner I think it would be a poor choice to invest in any card that's $500 or more when they're soon to be obsolete.

New midranged cards based on new technology could soon outperform it at a lower cost. It's hard to say.

NO, 6800GT will blow the doors off the 9800XT, and I have both.

I think he's agreeing with that... he's saying upgrade the 9800XT to one of those cards (I think)

cool. first off i'd like to thank all you guys for the speedy, informative posts. i really like this site now and i hope i m not asking too many questions as i always like to research my investments. you said next generation cards are around the corner. already??didnt the 6800s and x800s series just come out like in novemberish??if so what are the new cards gonna be called and when will they be out??that means the 6800s and x800s line will drop drastically(from500+ to 400 and below??)wow i cant believe how fast these companies put out faster and faster cards!!faster than game developers have to time to use the current(obsolete??)technology!i have lots to learn as a noobie comp builder lol!!

If you want to see what the next generation of cards is going to look like, do a search for r520.

I haven't really been keeping up with it so I don't know how long it's going to be before some newer cards come out, but the videocard area has consistently been the area where technology changes the fastest.

Depending on availability when the new cards are released, it might not have much effect on prices of older cards.

If you want to keep up to date, check the main page of Anandtech and read the articles that come out.

This is a good article showing the relative performance of the newest cards out right now (except SLI).

I currently have a rig more/less on par with yours, with a 9800Pro 128MB. The video card is definitely a sore point (I'm still hoping for the day when I can run Far Cry all maxed out with minimum 30fps) but I'm more towards skipping the 6800-class generation and jumping straight into PCI-E (and as it also involves a mobo change I guess that'll mean a rig change as well). I generally don't buy into the strategy of waiting for older cards to drop in prices, as manufacturers would rather obsolete older cards rather than have them compete with their newer ones.

You have a great system as it is.

Maybe a new video card wouldn't hurt if you are into games alot.

Just don't get a 6600 GT, as your card is just as good, & slightly better in some situations.

I'd say a 6800 GT would a good upgrade for you if you want to run games with max AA & AF.
