How good is Creative about driver updates?

I've been happy with my now 2-month old X-Fi Platinum card. However, once every couple of weeks, I'll boot up the computer to what I would describe as "crystalized" sound. I hate to even use that as a description, because it's not in relation to the crystalizer "feature" of the X-Fi. Any sound, including the Windows startup/login sound, sounds really high-pitched and just completely out of kilter.

Sometimes, if I fail to reboot in enough time, the card goes into what sounds like self-destruct mode and just emits the loudest, most obnoxious sound it can. Quickly turning down the volume and a quick reboot fixes the issue, and all is well again. Given my adequate computer knowledge, I can only imagine this being a driver issue. However, it's been years since I've owned a Creative sound product.

I'm not really worried about this minor issue with the card, but I was wondering how good Creative is with their driver updates? I'm anxious to get my hands on something a little newer than what was in the box, but didn't really find anything on Creative's website.

TIA

Hmmmmm, just "updated" to this driver you linked to.

Before:

Driver Date: 7/12/2005
Driver Version: 5.12.8.1141

After:

Driver Date: 8/8/2005
Driver Version: 5.12.2.1143

It conflicts with what I normally view as spotting the newer driver. The date and last number are higher with the driver I "updated" to, but that 3rd part of the version is lower, from 8 to a 2.

So is the download linked above considered a new driver or not?

Creative Labs produces the best drivers of any hardware vendor. Their quality far surpasses nVidia, ATi, AMD, and even Intel.

Keep them upgraded as always.

🙂

Yes, that's the latest driver. It's also what they're including on the latest driver CD's, a lot of people have reported a notable improvement in their soundcard after using them.

Oh, and C6FT7, whatever you're smoking, can I get some?

Thanks, it's much appreciated. I didn't care much for having to reset my settings in the different modes, but that's more like a 2 minutes nuisance.
