basically my hercules 4500 (kyro II) keeps crashing in UT due to bad drivers. its the only game i play so i get frustrated while playing when it crashes. i have an old voodoo3 3000 in my old computer. whats the average frames per second i can achieve with UT at 1280x1024x16 with high detail on everything. this is the minimum res i would like to use on a 19". for other specs, i have a 1400 Athlon and 256MB DDR.

i don't think it will be good. especially since u want to enable high detail at that resolution. but i could be wrong.

I don't know Spanky, the voodoos were pretty good in glide......
Maybe, It might work ok if you keep some setttings low-medium.

I would guess around 40-50 FPS, but i'm not completely sure about that
I know my Banshee would get 35-40 "Back in the day"

Try it and post the results!

low details... maybe. but high details... i think the voodoo will get beatdown :p don't get me wrong.. i love my voodoo3 2000... its in my backup CS rig. i play CS at 1024x768...getting around 50-60fps... except in scenes where more rendering of detail is neccesary. then it drops to like 20's. thats why i think the high detail is gonna kick the v3 right in the nutsack.

Well, I played UT on my old 400 PII with a Voodoo 3 and 320 megs of RAM at 10-7 just fine. Id imagine a 1400 Athlon would make for smooth frames at that rez ya want. Try it and see.

1280 is a tad high for a V3.

CPU has very little to do with performance at that res unless you have a rather good video card.

WHen I had my V3, I ran at 800x600 most of the times in games where high FPS is required, but in the end, it very much comes down to what you considder smooth, what I considder choppy, you may very well considder smooth.

For any Voodoo card, even the V5 like my own, the best resolution is 1024 X 768...anything above that is stretching it a bit...for your V3, you could just use the 22 bit post filter to get a little better IQ and still retain good framrates...the V5, unlike any of the previous Voodoo line, will scale in performance as the processor increases way into the 1 gig range and beyond...I've had a V3 1000 AGP, a V3 3000 PCI and besides the V5 5500 AGP I currently have in my possession, I'm awaiting a Voodoo Rush 4 meg PCI card and a Velocity 100, which is basically a crippled V3 1000 since it has but 8 megs of RAM...a bit of a 3dfx zealot, maybe... :D

Sidenote: V3 3000s are EXCELLENT overclockers...I managed 192mhz core/mem on my V3 3000 PCI and have seen others reach 200 easily...one even has his documented at 212!!!...thought you might wanna consider that as well... ;)

Edit: a crippled V3 2000, I misspoke...LOL...

Dionx,

The ideal resolution running UT on a Pentium 550E to a Pentium 1000E for a v3 3000AGP is 1024x768. I was able to play@1280x1024 with reasonable results. I could of gotten better if I scaled back on some of the details, but then why play it at this resolution. So about 6 months ago I updated my V3 3000 AGP (Tennmax Cooling) to a Gainward Geforce2 Pro450 to play my favorite game, UT, @1280x1024. I have since switched to RTCW and sometimes play UT, both@1280x1024 with great results. However, if you want to save a couple of bucks get the v3 3000, v4 v4500 or the v5500 for just UT. You will not get good framerates/performance from newer games with these cards, but will be okay for UT.

Also, one of the best features of the v3 card and UT was they?re made for each other. I was able to tab back and forth with my OS without any problems. Not with OpenGL. Brightness is not a problem with the v3 or v4+. OpenGL looks like you?re adding white everywhere.

If you can get a v3 or greater for cheap and know your only going to use this for UT or low resolution on newer games then go for it. If you want to invest in a card then your going to have to get a Gefore3 or greater and that will set you back atleast $150.

Good Luck. -JC

Um, my Voodoo 3 3000 CAME with UT. It'll do fine. 1024X768 might be a better rez, tho, as Sep said.

It'll absolutely crawl, especially if you run it under Glide. Glide's performance drops rapidly at higher resolutions when compared to Direct3D or OpenGL.

My guess would be about 38-40 average based on my experience with my old Voodoo4. (THey had the same basic chip and clockspeed.) The real question is why is UT crashing? My bro's, (soon to be mine), Kyro 2 never crashes in UT. I wouldn't be so hasty to blame the drivers either, but have you even updated them? I heard, but never experienced, about the crash being fixed with the newer ones. Oh, and when you do update them, make sure they are REALLY uninstalled before you install the newest ones. (Sometimes the uninstaller doesn't QUITE remove everything that it should and poop happens.)

yeah. i did the install from a fresh format. maybe the vid card just doesnt like my motherboard (Asus A7M266 with hybrid chipset [AMD northbrige and VIA southbridge]). i updated everything from VIA 4in1s to sound, video, windows update, etc etc.

Well, in that case, all I could recommend is going to www.paraknowya.com and ask the guys in thier forums too, and see if any of them know what's going on. You could also check thier old forums to see if anyone else had it in the past.
