How good is a USP?

I've always been fascinated by the USP. It started with the first person shooter, Counter-Strike. It was probably my favorite gun in the game with it's blue tint, deadly accuracy and not to mention the silencer - so 1337! So how good is a USP in real life? Is it even available to civilians to purchase or use?

Pfft...long range headshots during pistol rounds were so much more satisfying - silenced is even better.

I guess no one on ATOT has shot a USP to chime in .

I'm not sure, but I would imagine that the first shot from the USP goes exactly where you wanted it, the rest are a crapshoot.

I own a USP Compact in .45 flavor. I bought the compact because I wanted a carry gun and the full-frame USP would've been too large to conceal on my person. It's a great gun, but really no better than my Glock 19. It all comes down to the shooter and how competent and accurate you are with it, how it feels in your hand and if you're willing to take the extra ~$250 hit in the wallet.

USPs are very nice handguns. I own a USP45 Tactical, and its bigger brother the Mk. 23 myself. Very reliable, but expensive. The big drawback is the price of the full capacity magazines. Those prices are pretty much rape.

I like the USP. Like, not love. All HK products are pretty good and they price them to reflect that. I personally think the USP is dated and depending on what caliber/version you're looking at, you're better off with the P2000 or P30. If you're going full-sized, then yea, the USP is nice. If compact, then the P2000 or P30 are more modern versions of the USP compact. The magazine release doesn't do it for me, but I like the hexagonal rifling and how easy it is to clean the inside of the barrel. I'm accurate with them but don't want to pay the price. My personal favorite company is Sig. The p226 and p229 (which I've had) along with all other P2xx are solid designs.

Life isn't like a video game, so try to join a local club/forum and get out and try some before buying. Oh, you're in maryland, about as bad as me in California, but you should still be able to get them.

Why is there a $250 premium on the USP? Is it for the name (H&K)? Recoil reduction mechanism? Overall build quality? Guns are fascinating but I've no interest in actually shooting or owning one - I do like playing with them online though.

Ok, I kind of lied. I'm a fan of new challenges, and hitting targets is pretty damn hard with a hand gun I hear. I wanted to get into archery at one point but meh, I just never took it to heart. I'm sure the same will happen with shooting handguns. To be honest, I think I'm just scared of guns.

The HK name pretty much, they really love their shit and they price it accordingly.

They to make -excellent- products though, so their price is generally under the category of "you get what you pay for"

The Recoil reduction mechanism does work, but it isn't as huge at their marketing makes it out to be.

H&K are the Sony/Bose/Apple of the gun world. Yes, all their products are good quality. Yes, you pay extra for them. A lot extra. There are a few rabid fanboys who will defend them to the death just as with any company. In general I think they're still well-regarded but many gun people aren't interested in them because they see them as simply too overpriced.
