How good is a G9 (9 pin DIN) connection

I just got my speakers (Hercules XPS 510) and noticed they did not have an optical input even though my Hercules Fortissimo 5.1 indicated that these could hookup optically. It does however have a G9 (9 PIN DIN) connection, so does my Fortissimo. Any ideas on the quality of this connection?
