How good is a 640M in a laptop?

I find it hard to research how decent it is in a laptop and what kind of graphics it will be able to achieve.

Does it directly compare to a desktop 640?
 
Thanks for that link...very helpful. I like at the end how it shows the FPS for the different games...just wish it said was resolution that was for...or at least, i couldn't find that.
 
A important specification issue is the 640m comes with both ddr3 and gddr5. You have to really dig in to a particular laptop to often find what it has. The harder to find , it probably has the slower version. Which is ddr3.
 
It's meh. Better than the best current integrated solutions but not by a whole lot. You'll be able to play games at 720p medium detail settings and get smooth frame rates nearly all the time.
 
My friend has a laptop with one coming in a day or two, so I'll find out soon. They seem fairly capable. Definitely more than anybody needs to derp around the internet, and I think they'll run quite a few games on medium settings, with only the intense ones dragging it to the unplayable range.

Agreed. I had one that played a LOT of games fine on native res at 1080p. Obvously AA was a no-no but Mass Effect 3 for example ran like butter 40-60 fps.

It's WAY better than integrated...problem is this section of AT views anything that isn't cutting, bleeding edge as a step above crap.

You can look at reviews of gt 640 desktop cards which also use ddr3, but run at 900mhz, while mobile gt640m runs at 625mhz. In a small chassis like that, it might run slower? I don't know.
 
Buying anything below the 650m is tough there's probably 40nm/28nm versions along with gddr5 and ddr3 versions and they can have several different specs for # or cores.
