how good has voice recognition gotten?

Has the technology gotten to the point where a person can dictate notes without much effort? What's the best hardware/software for it?

Thanks!

I have a coworker that uses Dragon Naturally Speaking for programming. She has Fibro-Mialga, so typing a lot is a hardship. The software works almost flawlessly.

Haven't used it in a while, but Dragon NaturallySpeaking is pretty good. You have to spend quite a bit of time in the beginning training it, though.

It's been about a year since I've seen it in use, but even then it still wasn't that great. One of my professors lost the use of one of his hands in an accident, so the school set him up with a very powerful laptop and speech-recognition software. It *sometimes* worked, but more often than not he still had to go back and do some "hunt and peck" with his one good hand to correct all the mistakes it made. Sometimes it refused to work at all.

hmmm...judging by the other post, either the school skimped on the software end of that deal, or the professor was just muddling everything. My guess would be the later; he was having some surgeries to try and rescue that hand, and would come to school hopped up on all kinds of stuff to keep it from hurting him. Perhaps the speech was a little too muddled for the software to pick up.

some automated customer support stuff has gotten pretty good. with the recoridng asking you questions and u responding in plain speech.. not just numbers either.

I know if you calL Sears you get prompted for what department you want. You say things like "Hardware", "Lawn and Garden", etc. Sometimes you have to say it twice before it seems to recognize it but it sort of works. As for straight dictating, Dragon is the only one I've heard of but I haven't played with that stuff in years.

Thanks guys!
I'm heading to CompUsa - hope they have dragon. Any recommendations for a headset? I'm thinking of using Skype as well. Is USB the way to go? I forget if my soundcard is full duplex - that's the norm now, right?

Make sure your mic is noise cancelling.

When you teach it, make sure you read the examples in the way you'll be using it.

I recommend the Plantronics...behind the head models. I picked one up for CounterStrike a few years back and it's awesome...and comfy too!
