How good are vga ---> component cables?

I'm getting a new pc and will be using my old laptop as a low-rent htpc. The problem is that my laptop does not have DVI and hooking it up via s-video looks kinda crummy (have a 57" HDTV).

Would a vga to hdmi cable look decent enough?

no.

Edit: a vga to hdmi cable is impossible I think. A vga to component adapter requires a transcoder inbetween, which is often of very poor quality. You see some dvi to component adapters, but they aren't really adapters either, as the converting is done on the video card and outputted to the adapter when it's present - hence only specific video card models will support the dvi to component adapters.

It's going to look like crap too and be limited to 480i res. It might look decent for video/games though. Text will be terrible.
