how good are those dynamic dns services?

I am trying to setup a vpn for someone back to their house. a static ip doubles the cost of their monthly service.
so would something like that work? if so which service?

also could I setup a 3rd level domain. like I have hollen.org could I make home.hollen.org goto my home IP address?

I would be using this with a SMC or netgear router that supports this stuff in its setup.

I've been using no-ip.com for a long time. I used to use hn.org but they became rather unreliable - are they still around even?

No-ip has a little app that autoupdates the IP too if it changes.

I also use easymonitor.com to auto notify me if my no-ip.com redirect connection goes down.

Quite a handy little setup.

I have a fancy schmancy setup that my friend made. It uses my linux system to poll a web page for my IP address. Then, if the IP has changed, it logs in to his DNS server as him and updates my subdomain off of his domain. Every 15 days, if there is no change, it updates automatically just to be safe. It checks every 15 minutes.

I use dyndns.org and directupdate to automaticly update if the IP canges and it works great

My Ip changes about once a month and I occasionally remote into home from work.

What I do is use an obscure port for my remote connection. If my IP address changes, I use a port scanner to scan the range that my ISP uses for my area. My computer is the only one that answers and off I go. <shrug> I don't really like scanning for it but it happens so rarely that I don't think I'll piss anyone off.
